General Summary of Position:
The Office of Residence Life is looking for a dynamic, student centered person to fill our Resident Director position! The Resident Director is responsible for the overall management and supervision of a residence hall, and the position includes staff supervision, community development, operations management, and student support. This position is a fantastic entry level opportunity to provide support and development to students while developing and growing your professional skills.
The Resident Director at the University of Massachusetts Lowell is a senior staff member in the Office of Residence Life, supplementing and complementing the processes of formal education by enhancing the quality of life in the residence halls; enhancing the educational environment by creating a living and learning experience that will optimize individual growth and foster community development. Working in unison with Student Affairs staff, residence hall staff, and student leaders the Resident Director creates a residential environment conducive to the intellectual, psycho-social, moral, and cultural growth and maturation of the resident population. Specific responsibilities will depend upon the individual needs of his/her particular residence hall and the needs of the developing Residence Life program.
Key Responsibilities Include:
- Provide direct supervision and leadership to a residence hall student staff, including participation in the planning and implementation of staff training and staff selection, as well as the completion of regular evaluations of student staff.
- Oversee the design and implementation of programs and events in the Residence Halls in order to enhance student development and sense of community in the residential environment.
- Oversee the occupancy management of assigned residence hall, including the coordination of check-ins, check-outs, fire, health, and safety inspections, roster verification, room switches, room condition reports, and damage billing.
- Participate in the Resident Director duty rotation and respond to crises as they arise.
- Serve as a conduct officer to address policy violations and behavioral concerns in the Residence Halls.
Minimum Qualifications (Required):
- Bachelor's Degree
- Previous supervisory experience and the ability to work effectively with students, faculty and staff
- Previous Residence Life experience, in a leadership role within a residence hall in a College or University
- Proven ability to apply the tenets of student development, organizational development, staff development, and quality improvement in a student affairs setting
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Proven ability to address the needs of student groups and staff and promote a positive residential culture and community
- Proven ability to work closely with faculty, staff, students, and parents
- Understanding and knowledge of the residential campus conduct process, as well as a working knowledge of FERPA and other pertinent laws surrounding residential conduct
- Proficient in many computer software programs including those in the Microsoft Office group, FileMaker Pro, Adobe Acrobat, and the University’s Peoplesoft (SIS) and StarRez software
- Master’s degree in Student Personnel Services, Higher Education, or a related field of study
