Director of Environmental Health and Safety
Job Summary: Reporting to the Assistant Vice President of Financial Affairs for The University of Alabama (University), the Director of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) will develop, implement, manage, and assess strategies, policies and programs related to environmental health and safety. The Director of EHS is responsible for the oversight of the following programs: hazardous waste, chemical management, fire safety, occupational safety, environmental programs, as well as related training programs and compliance.
Additional Department Summary: The Director of EHS is responsible for the oversight of hazardous waste, chemical management, fire safety, asbestos inspections, related training programs and compliance. The successful candidate must have experience developing and implementing forward thinking systems and processes that have enhanced the EHS culture and demonstrated compliance improvement. Further, the successful candidate will cultivate partnerships with campus constituents in order to synchronize safety and regulatory compliance with the University’s strategic research goals.
Required Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of five (5) years of experience in an environmental, health or safety environment.
Additional Required Department Minimum Qualifications: Must have valid U.S. driver's license. Must be at least 21 years of age at time of hire and have an acceptable Motor Vehicle Report as determined by the insurance carrier. Final candidates who are not current University of Alabama employees must submit to and successfully pass a post-offer drug screen.
Skills and Knowledge: Demonstrated leadership experience with managing EHS teams. Broad understanding and general knowledge of federal and state laws and regulations governing environmental health and safety. Specific, expert knowledge in one of the EHS disciplines, including chemical safety, occupational safety, radiation safety, biological safety or fire safety. Experience with managing web-based systems to support EHS and Compliance programs. Strong oral and written communication skills. Demonstrated experience with improvements in safety, productivity and teamwork.
Preferred Qualifications: Master’s degree and five (5) years of progressive responsible EHS higher education management experience. May require advanced level training or certification.
