ASSISTANT DEAN OF ACADEMIC AND FACULTY AFFAIRS
Harvard Law School (“HLS”) seeks a new Assistant Dean of Academic and Faculty Affairs as it embarks on a new phase of curricular and pedagogical innovation and reform following the appointment of John F. Manning as Dean in July 2017. Reporting directly to the long-serving Associate Dean for Academic and Faculty Affairs & Chief of Staff and working closely with the Dean and faculty committee chairs, the Assistant Dean manages all functions of the Office of Academic Affairs (“OAA”). The OAA provides critical strategic leadership and concierge-quality support to curricular planning and development, the faculty appointments processes, faculty policy matters and institutional research requests, as well as oversight and implementation of systems that facilitate and track the work of HLS’s 115 full-time faculty and 200 other teaching resources. The Assistant Dean collaborates with the Office of the Registrar and directly supervises an Assistant Director of Academic Affairs, an Assistant Director of Faculty Affairs, an Information Systems Manager and an Academic Affairs Coordinator.
HLS is unusual in combining in OAA the administration of curricular planning and faculty appointments. The Assistant Dean serves on the Curriculum Committee (with the Dean, the Deputy Deans and the Associate Dean of Academic and Faculty Affairs) and staffs two Faculty Appointments Committees (one for entry level and the other for lateral). Essential responsibilities of the Assistant Dean include:
- Planning and development of HLS’s curriculum, including tracking of faculty teaching preferences, teaching gaps and curricular analysis; management and implementation of projects related to curricular development.
- Administration and support of the faculty appointments committees, including direct interaction with faculty chairs, preparation of weekly meeting materials, solicitation of candidate reviews, preparation of cases for faculty action and University review, and maintenance of committee websites.
- Academic advising of students enrolled in HLS’s joint and coordinated degree programs.
- Management of the visiting faculty and adjunct lecturer appointments process and on-boarding of appointees to HLS.
- Management of residential and non-residential academic fellowship programs.
- Oversight of annual updating of the HLS Faculty Manual and Handbook of Academic Policies, including policy review and analysis.
- Oversight of the Faculty Workshop series.•Annual collection and analysis of faculty data, including outside activities, leave requests, summer research and conflict of interest reporting; management of faculty data for institutional research, compliance and external reporting purposes.
- Monitoring changes in the ABA Standards and Rules of Procedure for Approval of Law Schools and their impact on HLS policies and practices; oversight of ABA annual questionnaires and reports.
- Maintenance of the HLS faculty information system.
- Management and regular improvement of OAA web site and related web projects, including faculty web pages; oversight of OAA print publications, including the faculty directory.
- Management of the OAA’s budget.
- Serving as an ambassador to the HLS community.
- Possible service as HLS Title IX liaison as needed.
Qualifications: At least eight years of experience in higher education administration, including a successful record of office management and professional supervision, are essential. A JD and experience with curricular planning and faculty affairs are strongly preferred. The successful candidate will be a strategically minded, analytical academic leader; and also an autonomous self-starter with a command of process, technical savvy, and intellectual flexibility. Candidates should demonstrate discretion and the ability to build trust with and engage faculty and other academic professionals, both as a collaborative project manager and an individual contributor. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential. Domain knowledge and professional networks in legal education would be advantageous.
