Brief Summary of Work for this Position:
UNCW STEAM Team is a week-long, residential summer camp hosted by UNCW for underserved ninth and tenth grade students recruited from New Hanover, Pender, and Brunswick counties. The camp encourages students from populations underrepresented in universities and colleges to pursue higher education and a variety of career paths through applied learning opportunities in science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics. A select group of students with an expressed interest in STEAM disciplines, an exemplary academic record, and a recommendation from a school official are accepted into the program. The camp is free for admitted students.

The STEAM Summer Camp Residential Evening Staff Member is responsible for the supervision of evening activities with students. He/she must maintain a sense of teamwork and collaborative relationships amongst other staff members to maximize the quality of the residential programs for STEAM students. He/she will oversee all evening programmatic activities related to STEAM dorm life including safety, meals, sleeping arrangements, and behavior management. Coordinates all established programming through the office of The College of Arts and Sciences. Interfaces with STEAM faculty to ensure student attendance and performance is up to program expectations.
Minimum Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Must be available to work Friday evening, June 15, through Saturday afternoon, June 23, 2018
Must be prepared to reside on main campus in dorm setting and be on-call overnight for emergencies June 15 to June 22
Must be willing and able to supervise, encourage and discipline students
Must be willing and able to implement and follow all UNCW program rules and policies, including those related to student cell phones
Must be willing and able to manage conflicts involving staff and/or students
Possess housing & residence life experience
Possess supervisory experience, especially involving children or young adults
Minimum requirement of two years towards an associates or bachelor’s degree
Must have strong oral communication skills to communicate effectively with students, parents, and staff
Must demonstrate initiative and leadership qualities
Must have desire and experience working with youth
Must demonstrate qualities of maturity, patience, and responsibility
Employment is subject to a criminal background check
Certifications or licensure required to perform the essential functions of the position:
CPR Certification (certification must be obtained by June 14, 2018)
First Aid Certification (certification must be obtained by June 14, 2018)
Must be at least 20 years old
Preferred formal education or training, professional skills and work experience:
Experience in residence life, teaching or children’s camps
Training in conflict resolution and/or team dynamics
Work Hours: General work schedule for Friday evening, June 15, through Saturday, June 23, 8:30am. Friday, June 15, 12:00pm-Staurday, June 16, 8:30am, 4pm-Sunday 8:30am; Week: Monday - Friday, 4:00pm-9am and (on-call overnight); Friday , June 22, 4pm-Saturday 8:30am; Work Days Friday afternoon, June 15 – Saturday morning, June 23 Hours Per Week 40-45hrs; plus hours on call, if necessary.
Recruitment Range: $15-$17 /hour
Please note, this is a temporary position. The length of the assignment will be based on department need with the possibility of continuation. Employees in temporary positions are not considered permanent state employees and do not earn leave. Temporary employees are subject to the Affordable Care Act guidelines.
