The Coordinator for Academic Affairs in the Office of Advanced Engineering Education (OAEE) will provide customer service and address the needs of incoming students, current students, faculty and alumni associated with the Master of Engineering and Graduate Certificate in Engineering programs. This position will provide quality information and analysis services to inform planning, decision-making, student success, and institutional accountability. The position is an integral part of the Academic Affairs team within OAEE.

Duties and responsibilities may include the following: coordinate student intake for new, incoming students each semester and student success for all continuing students. Conduct regular surveys and assessments. Provide faculty services for the successful implementation of OAEE courses. Plan and facilitate regular faculty meetings; both large-scale and within specific programmatic areas. Manage the proctoring process. Plan and execute student curricular and co-curricular programming, including OAEE Graduate Student Appreciation Week, a new OAEE Distinguished Lecture Series, and a new OAEE Alumni Panel Discussion series. Conduct alumni tracking and engagement.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field.
  • A minimum of 3-5 years of experience in higher education is required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential matters with discretion and tact.
  • Availability to work occasional evenings and weekends as needed for special events.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills.
  • High attention to detail
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, multi-tasked environment, prioritize tasks, think proactively, and work independently, using good judgment and experience to make decisions.
  • Must be self-motivated, detail-oriented and an innovative problem solver.
  • Strong customer service, good judgment, and one who can work independently as well as in a team environment.


  • Master's degree in Higher Education Administration, Counseling, or a related field

  • Past experience at UMD, with knowledge of UMD technology, including Student Information System (SIS)

  • Preference for work experience in admissions, academic affairs, or student affairs, particularly for graduate programs

  • Excellent workshop/lecture/event planning

  • Proven strategies to build a positive rapport with students while assisting them in matriculating through the program and with faculty.

Physical Demands

Sedentary work. Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Repetitive motion. Substantial movements (motions) of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers. The worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: analyzing data and figures; viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading. Must be able to attend meetings across campus. Some weekend and evening hours will be required.
