Position Summary:

The Executive Director for Undergraduate Academic Student success works under the leadership of the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Programs and serves in a role that oversees the development, management, and supervision of academic student success initiatives for undergraduate students at APU. The Executive Director will collaborate with other academic support services and student life offices on campus to support and implement programs and employ high impact practices/strategies that enhance academic engagement and successful degree completion, and promotes thriving among undergraduate students. The Executive Director serves as the administrative leader of the office, supervising office academic administrators and staff. The Executive Director manages and employs office resources, including the budget, to meet the mission and goals of the office.


Doctorate in a related field preferred.


Academic Student Success Initiatives

  • Advocate and coordinate university-wide efforts to promote academic student success, persistence, and graduation among a diverse student population, which are demonstrated by achieving and sustaining retention goals and graduation rates.
  • Collaborate with various academic support service offices, Enrollment Management Services, and Student Life Offices to implement university wide student success initiatives and goals that meet the needs of diverse student groups.
  • Work with the General Education Council and Undergraduate Studies Council to help students achieve university-wide aims for academic student success.

First-Year Experience

  • Provide academic oversight of the First Year Seminar (FYS) program, including curriculum development, faculty development, and program assessment.
  • Supervise the FYS coordinator to ensure successful implementation of the FYS program. Oversee the Assistant Director as they supervise student workers.
  • Provide guidance to and facilitate the First-Year Experience Steering Committee that will research best practices and make recommendations for improvements and changes to programs in an effort to increase student retention.

Academic Advising and Retention

  • Oversee the provision of academic advising and retention programs provided by the office to ensure the initiatives and activities meet the needs of the undergraduate students at APU, with special consideration to populations such as student athletes, and transfer, undeclared, probation students.
  • Supervise the Director to ensure successful implementation of academic advising and retention goals and practices within the department. Oversees the Director as he/she supervises the Academic Success Coaches and the Graduate Assistants.

Office Leadership

  • Develop and employ an annual strategic plan directed towards achieving outcomes.
  • Identify resources and needs, develop budget requests, and manage annual budget.
  • Serve on university committees.
  • Assign office staff to university committees and task forces to represent student success initiatives.
  • Conduct regularly scheduled departmental meetings with directors and staff.
  • Oversee workload and assignments of employees in office.
  • Manage strategic implementation of the program budget.
