Job description

Provide a coherent vision for collaborative research through effective leadership that embraces the full range of disciplines represented by the Life Research Institute (LRI). Develop the LRI’s national profile, enhance its national recruitment, and foster its partnership development. Partner with staff and the UA Vice President for Research and Economic Development to develop the LRI’s strategies and associated financial operational plan, allocating resources through clear objectives, targets, and associated measurements. Identify, promote, and contribute resources to strengthen the LRI and manage its portfolio. This includes identifying and supporting opportunities for research within existing funding streams and, where possible, through multidisciplinary collaboration across the University and beyond. Work with member centers to set and achieve income generation targets from research funding agencies and further the LRI’s programs by capitalizing on funding initiatives from state, federal, and foundation sources. Utilize the appropriate mechanisms to support and promote the transfer of knowledge between the University and nonacademic parties that use research.

Oversee regular meetings of the LRI Advisory Board. Ensure that the Advisory Board receives regular LRI progress reports and that any plans for the future of the LRI take the Advisory Board’s counsel into consideration. Ensure that the LRI and its members comply with University policies for research quality and conduct, as well as the requirements of all relevant regulatory bodies. Maintain close ties with all relevant professional, statutory, and regulatory bodies. Ensure the availability of development opportunities for each LRI member in alignment with their specific profession. Attract, lead, and retain faculty and staff who will promote academic and research excellence within the LRI and will contribute to the successful development of the LRI and University. Support faculty and staff achievement through appropriate performance and development processes.

Communicate effectively and ensure full staff engagement; create and maintain an awareness of University policies and procedures and the application thereof. Forge and maintain external relations essential to LRI business by promoting the University to external bodies and organizations. Enhance the University’s reputation, profile, and influence at all levels. Work closely with the directors of all centers associated with the LRI to facilitate each center’s the research mission. Stimulate the development of new research centers that are consistent with the LRI research focus, taking advantage of unique research and clinical resources within the University.

Assess the need for common resources across LRI centers (e.g. statistical/methodological resources, data collection resources, data archiving to meet federal funding requirements, grant submission and grant management resources); develop plans to provide common resources or to facilitate access to resources elsewhere within the University.

  • Strong academic record and eligibility for the rank of Full Professor.
  • PhD or equivalent training and experience.
  • Extensive research experience and several years of experience in a senior academic leadership role.
  • Successful and sustained leadership capabilities, evidenced nationally and, preferably, internationally.
  • Track record of effective academic leadership and team building.
  • Experience with cross-disciplinary research initiatives and collaboration.
  • Acute understanding of the priorities, operation, and strategies of grant-funded research, evidenced by a record of funded research.
  • Successful and sustained record of achieving high levels of research-based funding.
  • History of staff management and performance evaluation.
  • Proven capacity to successfully train and develop early-career researchers.
  • Demonstrable track record in strategic and operational management and planning.
  • Familiarity with financial planning and resource allocation. Ability to lead and successfully implement change.


  • Be able to identify, create, and articulate a coherent LRI vision.
  • Be prepared to deliver successful outcomes for large-scale, long-term thematic research.
  • Combine and integrate the skills and expertise of highly motivated staff into multidisciplinary teams, building upon existing collaborations and facilitating new opportunities.
  • Engage a range of internal and external stakeholders to collaboratively identify problems and appropriate solutions within agreed upon timetables and budgets.
  • Manage resources effectively to ensure the LRI is self-sustainable, using income generated from research donors.
  • Have a record of encouraging and supporting entrepreneurial activity.
  • Demonstrate a thorough awareness of research ethics issues.
  • Implement corrective action in the event that a research activity is in difficulty, demonstrating successful monitoring and decision-making skills.
