Duties:

Lead migration projects from older on-premise storage hardware to newer cloud based storage environments as necessary/applicable. Design, test and implement backup-recovery and disaster-recovery processes and procedures for re-establishing storage and recovering data in support of operating systems, databases and applications in the event of a minor and/or catastrophic disruption. Re-test on a quarterly basis or more often as necessary. Provide cloud based switch, fabric and storage network configuration as well as zoning, masking and mapping of storage in an enterprise cloud based storage environment. Must be able to understand and administer all areas of the cloud based storage. Assist/lead system administration efforts as necessary/required. Complement a high-performance team with your unique talents for innovative cloud solutions. Participate in systems design to marry business needs with proper technology (must be able to communicate in business terms). Ensure proper integration between software applications and infrastructure architecture. Ensure solutions are maintained for high availability, scalability, security, and supportability. Oversee information systems security safeguards. Facilitate change control, maintenance, and incident response. Enable effective integration between Development and Operations, that is, strive towards DevOps. Continually learn, discover, and evolve, as well as mentor junior staff within the work unit. Research, plan and implement changes to prevent/circumvent problems and enhance the overall computing environment with regard to cloud systems security, stability and usability. Provide operational support and guidance to System Administration staff, university departments and end users to support the management and use of cloud solutions. Provide recommendations for effective and efficient cloud system use. Monitor the cloud environment related to growth and performance. Serve as the Senior Cloud Engineer responsible for researching, analyzing, testing and implementing cloud platform and storage technologies in a heterogeneous storage and server environment. Implement cloud solution management strategies, procedures and documentation. Capable of working with minimal supervision. Considered an expert in the implementation and use of cloud systems. Knowledgeable of industry best practices in the implementation of complex cloud environments. Participate in after-hours on-call rotation. Delegate responsibility to other technical staff as appropriate.

The University of Alaska - Fairbanks seeks an experienced, innovative, and collaborative Lead Cloud Engineer to help lead a skilled engineering team in a hybrid environment of cloud and on-premises based systems, compute, storage, database, and data center related services.

 

Candidate must have a strong & innovative approach to problem solving, great technical leadership, excellent communication (written and verbal, formal and informal), flexibility, and a self-motivated working style with attention to detail.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: Experience with Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud Platform, or other cloud services is a must. Familiarity with Automation Tools such as Chef, Puppet or Ansible. An in-depth understanding and hands-on knowledge/expertise of/with both on-premise and cloud based storage system/network administration techniques and practices is an essential requirement. Unix and MS Windows system administration experience as it relates to storage systems (i.e. luns, initiators etc).

Required Experience: Solid technical knowledge of Solution Architecture and Development in the Public cloud. Minimum of 2 years storage administration experience with SAN and NAS storage systems/networks in a heterogeneous operating systems environment. Unix/Windows system administration experience.

Typical Education or Training: Bachelor of Science Degree in Computer Engineering/Science preferred or minimum of 4 years storage system/network administration technical on-the-job experience.
