About the Position

Reporting to the Assistant Director for Student Support Programs, the Critical Transition Advisor will work under general supervision to provide individual and group advising to students in the College of Engineering. The incumbent will also assist in the development and coordination college-wide services and programs, and take leadership in the implementation of assigned areas of focus which may include: Student engagement and leadership, Peer support programs, Life-skills, and College to career transition services. The advisor will also support college and campus wide events on behalf of the college.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
- Provide individual and group advising services that facilitate student success, persistence and timely degree completion as well as ease the transition process from college to career.
- Assist in implementation of assigned program tasks and activities related to student engagement, peer support, life-skills and/or professional development.
- Guide students with development of basic education/career plans and tools including but not limited to; building resume, portfolio preparation, professional ethics, interviewing, and networking competencies, among others.
- Create and facilitate workshops, group discussions and individualize consultations with students in collaboration with college offices and departments to ensure alignment of services and avoid duplication of interventions.
- Collaborate with Career Center, Financial Aid & Scholarship Office, Engineering Student Success Center and other campus partners in the development and implementation of targeted, on-going services and activities for undergraduate students in the College of Engineering.
- Assist in development and implementation of programs and workshops which support and advance college/unit's mission and objectives.
- Develop, plan and coordinate small group and college-wide events and activities which may include workshops, networking events, company tours, trainings, information sessions, community-building, mock interviews, student leadership, shadowing days, etc.

Education and Experience

Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration or a job related field and two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field. A master's degree in a job related field may be substituted for one year of the professional experience.

- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to appropriately handle sensitive information and communications with students, parents, employees and external agencies.
- Ability to collaborate with SJSU units and external stakeholders.
- Ability to coordinate academic and non-academic events.
- Ability to work evenings and weekends as needed for special events.
- Ability to drive on university business.
- Ability to maintain a valid driver's license.
- Ability to moderate undergraduate student and industry partner forums.
- Ability to advise students individually and in groups on routine matters where required.
- Knowledge of related software applications (e.g. word processing, spreadsheet, presentation software, CMS, etc.).
- Ability to perform accurately in a detail-oriented environment.
- Ability to handle multiple work priorities, organize and plan work and projects.
- Ability to reason logically and analyze and solve organizational and operations problems of one or several program areas.
- Ability to use initiative and resourcefulness in planning work assignments and in implementing long-range program improvements.
- Ability to collect, compile, analyze, and evaluate data and make verbal or written presentations based on these data.
- Ability to plan and conduct workshops, assist with organization of special events or activities, and make effective presentations before groups.
