Job description

The Pathologist's Assistant Lead for Surgical Pathology will work in a high-volume department with approximately 30,000 surgicals annually as well as with Pathology Residents.

Responsibilities for this position include serving as a practitioner, educator and a role model for residents, students, and staff members on grossing complex and small specimens, as well as performing frozen sections, specimen photography, and supporting tissue procurement for clinical research .

The incumbent will work closely with the Associate Director and Medical Director to establish and maintain an efficient grossing and frozen section area.

Will oversee daily operations of the surgical pathology gross room and organize workflow by distributing work/specimens to other PAs and residents. In addition to grossing complex and small specimens, the incumbent will perform duties relating to the administrative maintenance of surgical pathology protocols, procedures, reports, and data; as well as, conduct new employee orientation and training in grossing techniques. ASCP certification required.

Physical Requirements

Standing for long periods of time; lifting of specimens and objects; exposure to chemicals, blood, tissue, and body fluids; must wear personal protective equipment for long periods of time


Monday-Friday, variable hours


Grossing experience in academic medical center working closely with residents; frozen section experience.

Preferred Education/Experience

BS or MS from accredited Pathologists' Assistant program plus 2 years paid grossing experience preferred.
Experience in academic medical center, more than 1 year of grossing of complex specimens preferred.
