Deliver and repair a variety of Tele and Datacom communication products and services to the University and Medical Center customer base. Work includes installation, maintenance and repair such as terminating, testing and labeling of Cat6A cabling for devices including new communication outlets, video surveillance cameras and wifi access points. Install new telephone service, MAC (moves, adds and changes), service removal, and repair to existing services.
This role also consists of supporting the Duke data network which involves installation/activation of new wifi access points, rack/stack/config of new network switches, troubleshooting issues via ticketing process, port activation, VLAN changes,etc. Supporting the card access system which includes troubleshooting, replacement of existing devices. Supporting of the video surveillance system which includes troubleshooting and install new IP based cameras and activate onto the network. RF activities around campus DAS, Radio and Wifi network.
DUTIES & WORK PERFORMED
Understand Duke's major communications platforms and services including: Cisco IP call manager and various peripheral systems. Perform MAC (move, add and change) work assigned daily by the Operations Desk and or Operations Manager. Work with the Operations Center to meet all assigned work order and repair requests in the most productive and expeditious manner.
- diagnose, repair or replace various communications equipment:
- telephone sets, jacks, faceplates, 110 blocks, jumpers, patch panel etc.
- terminate, test and label various cable and jacks including Cat 3, Cat 5, Cat 5E and Cat 6 cable
- data network switches and Wifi Access Points
- IP based video surveillance cameras
- card access readers/controllers
- RF equipment (radios, transmitters, DAS)
Work closely with various departments across campus as part of construction projects as well as with the OIT network engineering group, Duke University Police Department, etc.

- define the needs and requirements for customers and be positive and productive during interactions with them
- self-motivated to tackle observed problems, present recommendations, and complete changes as necessary
Essential Physical Job Functions
Must be able to lift up to 100lbs as part of normal job duties. Periodic overtime work to meet customer commitments. Job duties may include work in confined spaces, communication rooms, patient, administrative, research and student areas within the University and Medical Center. Moderate lifting and use of hand tools and ladders.
Technical College/Trade School or equivalent of five years industry experience
EXPERIENCE & SKILLS
Verified experience in communications installation, maintenance and repair. A valid NC driver's license.
Experience in deploying and managing a broad array of Cisco equipment: Switches, routers, Wireless (LWAPP) RF Technology such as NC State Viper P25 system and supporting of the system and handheld devices including interaction with the local municipalities.
On campus cellular infrastructure including our in building DAS system and macro towers which includes engaging with the major carriers (Verizon,AT&T,Sprint,T-Mobile)
Experience with OSP copper and fiber optic cable.
Ability to use e-mail and Microsoft Office programs (Word and Excel)
