Position Summary

The University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG) Division of Information Technology Services is seeking a highly skilled and experienced senior level network architect to join our Enterprise Network Architecture and Design team. This individual will work as part of an extraordinarily talented team of peers at a Carnegie Research University that is responsible for the design, implementation and management of our campus wired and wireless network environment. UNCG provides wired network services on Cisco based architecture, wireless services over Aruba controller-based architecture, and mixed security architecture which includes Cisco, Palo Alto Networks, and Trend Micro security appliances for 20,000+ faculty, staff and students across 103 main campus buildings. All campus network services are delivered and managed centrally through the Division of Information Technology Services in support of the instructional, administrative, and research programs of the University.

The ideal candidate will have wide experience in network engineering strategy, architecture, design, and implementation as applied to complex computing systems especially working with routing and switching technologies, security appliances, virtual (SDN) networking, etc. Will have experience architecting complex, secure networks for infrastructure modernization efforts and developing dynamic networks with infrastructure redundancy, and network link diversity to ensure high availability and disaster recovery. Will adhere to and develop new processes and policies as the environment grows and changes. Will have the ability to maintain complete technical documentation and provide knowledge, mentoring, and guidance to the team.

The qualified candidate must have advanced knowledge of TCP/IP within an IPv4 medium to large enterprise network context. In-depth design, architecture, and configuration skills of the Cisco Catalyst 6K platform, Cisco Catalyst 3800 platform, Cisco Nexus 9K/7K/5K platforms, and Cisco Application Centric Infrastructure are required. Familiarity with OSPF, MP-BGP, MPLS VPN, label distribution protocols, label switching, and VRF is required. Experience in design, architecture, and configuration of Aruba Networks 7K wireless controllers and access points (or equivalent technology experience) and Aruba ClearPass is highly desirable. Familiarity with industry-standard firewall, intrusion detection/prevention, proxy, IPAM, and radius technologies is highly desirable.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Extensive knowledge of / be fluent at:

-Wired IEEE networking standards: 802.3/Ethernet, 802.1x/Authentication, 802.1d/w spanning-tree, rapid spanning-tree (RSTP), per-vlan rapid spanning-tree (PVST+), 802.1q trunking.
-Wireless IEEE networking standards: 802.11a/b/g/n/ac, EAP/EAPOL/802.1x, 802.11h. Radio Frequency knowledge in the 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz spectrum.
-Either FreeRadius, and/or Microsoft NPS Radius.
-Solid understanding of network systems architecture, OSI model, QoS, and TCP/IP and IP based protocols, including IDS/IPS, firewall, OSPF, MP-BGP, MPLS, VPN, VRF.
-SNMP and its application in network monitoring systems.
-Computer systems architecture, operating systems, and network hardware/software.
-Good network workstation/server troubleshooting skills.
-Good understanding of Linux/UNIX and Windows 7/Windows 2008/2012 based systems. Familiarity with Linux/UNIX preferred.
-Basic understanding of IPv6 and how it differs from IPv4.
-Experience with traffic shaping devices and bandwidth management.
-Packet capture and analysis with Wireshark, TCPdump, or similar tools.
-Log analysis.

Exposure to/skills in:
-Network management software - InfoBlox NetMRI.
-Hardware interfacing.
-Applications installation.
-MS-Windows networking protocols.
-Cisco SAFE Architecture.
-Basic understanding of ITIL principles.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field
7+ years of recent network engineering expertise supporting an enterprise environment
Experience defining and implementing enterprise network security best practices and policies
Strong knowledge of networking technologies including TCP/IP (routing and subnetting), BGP, OSPF, QoS, MPLS, IPSec, MetroEthernet, VSS, ACI, UCS DIrector, etc.
Strong knowledge of Layer2 and Layer3 Cisco switches including Catalyst 29xx, 35xx, 38xx and Nexus 9K, 7K, 5K, 2K
Experience with Tipping Point, Cisco and Palo Alto Security appliances
Installation and support of Aruba/HP, controller-based, wireless solutions (or similar controller-based solution)
CCNA and CCDA or equivalent industry certification required

Preferred Qualifications

-Ability to work well with others, establish and maintain effective working relationships.
-Be willing to assist in strategic planning efforts.
-Highly skilled in oral and written communication.
-Good time management skills -perform multiple tasks/projects and meet deadlines.
-CCNP and CCDP or equivalent industry certification desired.
