Posting Summary:
The Office of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) is seeking a Hazardous Materials Technician to join the Hazardous Materials Management Group. Hazardous Materials Technicians are responsible for integral tasks that support the dynamic research and operation of the University of Virginia and Medical Center.

The Hazardous Materials Technician works in a team environment to pick-up and consolidate hazardous, non-hazardous, and regulated medical waste from the University and Medical Center facilities. This position will also provide customer service and consultation to the University community by answering waste-related questions and responding to emergency calls as directed.

Candidates must possess an Associates Degree or High School or Equivalent with 4 years of experience. Successful candidates will work well in a team, be highly reliable, and have the ability to communicate and act professionally with all members of the University community.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Ability to meet all physical requirements including lifting 50lbs, handling and manipulating materials, and walking and standing for extended periods of time

Ability to work in a team environment as a collaborative, professional and respectful team member

Ability to complete job duties and responsibilities while wearing personal protection equipment (PPE), including a respirator

Ability to work a schedule that may include on-call responsibilities to cover holiday, weekend and after hour response

Ability to follow all University and department policies and procedures

Ability to work safely with hazardous materials (e.g. chemical, biological, radioactive)

Ability to drive all department vehicles including box trucks and large cargo vans in accordance with all state and university policy

Strong record-keeping capabilities

Ability to communicate effectively with others, both verbally and in-writing

Comfortable working in a variety of workspaces including patient care, animal, research laboratory and outdoor environments
