The University of Chicago Campaign: Inquiry and Impact (http://campaign.uchicago.edu), the most ambitious and comprehensive campaign in the University's history, is raising $5 billion to support faculty and researchers, practitioners and patients, and students and programs across the University. Launched in October 2014, the campaign supports priorities in every division, school, department, and institute, and aims to engage 125,000 alumni and friends over its five-year duration.

Job Summary:

The Associate Director, Career Development will manage programs to cultivate and strengthen alumni and student ties to the University, including implementing career and professional development initiatives for the University community. Manage team of two assistant directors in developing programming focused on digital and in-person engagement in order to increase affinity for the University and support career and professional development opportunities for alumni and students. Programs may include career events, career webinars, alumni and student mentorship, and career community engagement. Recruit alumni and industry experts to participate in career programming for alumni. Review industry best practices and opportunities for continued program development sponsored by the Alumni Association.

Responsibilities:
  • Develop and implement a strategic plan with specific and measurable goals. Recruit and support alumni leadership for affinity groups and other volunteer networks and assist in generating programs for their career affinity groups, both globally and in their own local communities. Assist volunteers in building a strong national and international community with a career programming focus and ensure the smooth operation of volunteer boards and committees.
  • Serve as primary team lead for career and professional development programming sponsored by the Alumni Association and make recommendations to management. Oversee all aspects of team projects focused on alumni and student career and professional development. Lead development of additional digital career offerings for alumni.
  • Work effectively with internal and external partners to achieve goals and objectives. Develop strong working relationships with colleagues throughout Alumni Relations & Development and campus-wide in order to coordinate programs and services for the Alumni Association. Travel regularly and meet with alumni and constituents to build and strengthen participation in all areas of the University. May manage a portfolio of alumni volunteers and donors. Utilize personal visits as an opportunity to assess volunteer interests, engagement, and volunteer potential. Participate actively and consistently in staff meetings.
  • Hire, manage, evaluate, develop, and terminate staff as needed. Set clear goals and expectations for Career Development team. Train staff on effective volunteer recruitment and management strategies. Communicate standards for individual and group performance and apply standards fairly and consistently. Assess individual and team performance and evaluate overall success of team effort. Monitor and manage programming budget. Address budget variances as they occur.
  • Perform other duties as assigned in support of alumni relations programs. Seek opportunities for professional development that will enhance job performance, including building networks within the University and with colleagues at peer institutions.

Additional Requirements

Education and Experience:

Education:
  • Bachelor's degree or higher required.


Experience:
  • A minimum of three years of professional work experience in fundraising, development, alumni relations, donor relations, nonprofit management, research, marketing, communications, sales or similar professional work experience required.
  • A minimum of one year of leading a project team or managing staff required.
  • A minimum of one year of experience developing and monitoring budgets preferred.
  • Experience or an interest in leading the Career Development team in increased digital career programming preferred.


Technical Knowledge or Skills:
  • Demonstrated skill and knowledge of, or ability to learn quickly, the internal workings of the University as well as the technology tools available to the Office of Alumni Relations and Development, including Griffin (the University's Donor Relationship Management System), Microsoft Windows computer environment, Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access.


Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:
  • Willingness and ability to travel to campus and/or non-campus locations for University business.
  • Willingness and ability to work evenings and weekends.
