Term Instructor/Assistant Professor of Business
The Business Foundations area of the School of Business at George Mason University has a Term Faculty appointment open for a qualified individual to teach Professional Skills courses starting August 2018. The initial appointment is for one academic year, subsequent renewals are based on performance, programmatic needs, and budgetary constraints. This is a full-time position with benefits. Rank assignment is contingent on level and type of experience and education. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The standard teaching load for this position is 24 credits per year (4:4). A lower load may be possible if the candidate's qualifications meet relevant criteria in the school's workload policy. Summer teaching for additional compensation may be available upon successful renewal of term contract. Additional responsibilities include service to the Foundations Area, the School of Business, the University and the profession, such as student mentoring, committees, and interfacing with students and the business community.
This position joins an existing team of faculty teaching courses in the undergraduate curriculum: Business 103, “Developing Your Professional Skills: Foundational Elements;” and Business 303: “Developing Your Professional Skills: Advanced Elements.” The intent of the courses is both to provide a background for promoting success in the undergraduate program and to prepare students for successful entry into professional careers at the conclusion of their undergraduate programs. In accomplishing this, Business 103 includes material applicable from the perspectives of not only students but also professionals including time management, relationship building, working in teams, academic integrity and ethics, and the enhancement of capabilities in writing and presentations. Business 303 covers topics such as understanding the modern work environment (e.g., working in teams, diversity in the workplace, and cross-cultural personal competencies), developing leadership skills, business ethics and professional responsibilities, and engaging in the job search process.
- Master's degree with a minimum of 18 hours of graduate work in business or a related field;
- Strong teaching capabilities which enable the candidate to introduce undergraduate students to the business environment;
- Ability to aid students in developing the background and skills that will contribute to successful transitions to employment opportunities;
- Experience teaching at the postsecondary level;
- Experience in business or another relevant field; and
- Good citizenship is important as is the ability to work well with colleagues.
Business Foundations Area:
Faculty with multidisciplinary backgrounds within the Business Foundations Area teach undergraduate courses that engage students with a range of contemporary business contexts and provide a foundation for academic success in business major courses and in the professional work environment. This is an area focused on teaching excellence and collaboration.
Courses provide context and skills in the following areas:
- How to succeed in college
- The role of business and its impact on society
- Career development skills
- Professionalism and preparation for the workplace
- The global environment of business
- The legal environment of business
