CRISPR gene editing core facility manager

The successful applicant will fill the role of CRISPR/Cas9 Gene Editing Core Facility Manager within the UCI Sue & Bill Gross Stem Cell Research Center.
This is a new position with the primary responsibility of establishing a new gene editing core facility. The appointed individual will be responsible for development and implementation of standard operating procedures in performance of all aspects of in vitro gene editing in a variety of human stem cells including embryonic, adult, and induced pluripotent stem cells. The manager will consult with anticipated users in the development of their grant proposals and projects, assist users in design and execution of gene editing protocols for a variety of applications, as well as provide guidance and advice in selection, expansion and validation of gene edited stem cell cultures as needed by a wide variety of users and investigators.
Managing the gene editing core includes training and assisting researchers on and off campus in principles and techniques of in vitro gene editing, as well as developing innovative new approaches and protocols to solve complex research problems. The manager will work with SCRC leadership and administrative staff to establish and expand the operations of the gene editing core recharge facility, including establishing appropriate recharge rates for budget office approval, report preparation, assistance with all aspects of booking, monitoring usage, billing and reconciliation.
1) Research (75% Effort)
The core manager will serve to enable and expand the use of in vitro gene editing capabilities across a wide variety of faculty members' research programs. The manager will consult with individual faculty members and their research team members to advise and assist in the design and planning of experimental approaches to make maximum use of the available capabilities of the core facility. The manager is expected to provide solutions for stem cell, regenerative medicine, cell biology, biochemistry, immunology and cancer research utilizing the latest developments in today's rapidly changing technical environment. The manager will provide detailed input into experimental data analysis and interpretation, contributing to manuscript preparation and peer-reviewed publications. As well, the manager will provide advice, guidance and content concerning use of gene editing for grant proposal submissions. The manager is expected to be a co-author of scientific publications and recognized for academic achievements through multiple research grants, fellowship awards and scholarships.
2) Professional Competence and Activity (15% Effort)
In order to maximize the use and utility of the facility, the manager is expected to be a regional and national leader in use of gene editing approaches to enable a variety of research programs. The manager will participate in and lead professional development and training activities, meetings, seminars, professional and technical societies, as well as other research and educational organizations to establish and maintain the SCRC facility as a leader in gene editing. The manager will also provide input and guidance as needed for the preparation and review of grant proposals, manuscripts, presentations and other publications that include use of the facility and resources.
3) University and Public Service (10% Effort)
The manager will serve to promote the SCRC facility and the appropriate use of gene editing technologies within UCI and throughout an external network of interested individuals. The manager will be a competent teacher, providing training to a variety of researchers, including undergraduate students, graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, faculty members and stem cell techniques course participants, in appropriate and innovative research use of gene editing capabilities and technologies. The manager is expected to participate as a leader in local and regional organizations that facilitate and promote innovative development and use of gene editing techniques in research.
The successful applicant will have at least a Master's degree (PhD is preferred) and a minimum of three to five years of experience in stem cell culture and gene editing techniques, including expertise in using and editing iPSC or ESC models of human disease. The manager will be extremely knowledgeable in all aspects of CRISPR/Cas9 and other gene editing technologies and their application to stem cell and regenerative medicine research, as well as having high levels of competence in experimental design, analysis and interpretation.
