Position Summary

The Research Assistant I is responsible for a wide range of laboratory support in a plant genetics/genomics/bioinformatics laboratory. Duties include general lab practices including safety training, washing and autoclaving of lab materials, and preparation of solutions and media. Strong competence in plant care, plant tissue culture, and microscopy is required. The ability to work independently yet contribute to the overall efforts of the team is essential. Competency in software programs including MS Office, Excel, Powerpoint, and JIRA are required. This is an off-date position funded for one year from the date of the hire with possible extension contingent upon funding renewal.

Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in Biology, Genomics, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology or other related science fields; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in standard laboratory procedures and safety requirements and performing analytical and research techniques in the area related to Genomics research; experience in Bowtie, FASTQC, Cutadapt, TopHat, and Cufflinks, unix, R, Perl, Image J, Multi-Dimensional Scaling, and Pearson's Correlation Coefficients; required laboratory instrumentation knowledge in Qubit, Nanodrop, balance, pH meter, PCR machine, power supplies, SpeedVac, Covaris sonicator, Micro-centrifuge and LiCor; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Desired Qualifications

Communication Skills:

Ability to present project data (Orally and written); ability to contribute to project meetings through presentation of laboratory activities; ability to document laboratory practices, efforts, and activities.

Other Skills:

Experience in working in a team environment; multi-tasking is essential in this position; ability to read scientific literature pertinent to job; critical thinking and assessment skills are needed for the position; ability to work independently yet contribute to the overall efforts of the team is essential; ability to work with diverse personnel.
