The College of Education at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is seeking a Specialist in Education (Head Teacher) for the Pre-school classroom at University Primary School. This is a 100 percent time Academic Professional, non-tenured 9 month position. The start date for the position is August 16, 2018, and the deadline for applying is April 24, 2018.

Primary Position Function/Summary: As head teacher of the University Primary School pre-school program (the lab school of the College of Education), is responsible for leading and decision-making within the classroom, and contributing to the greater good and well-being of the school, as well as the University community.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Carry out the day-to-day educational program implementing the curricular framework of the project approach, and differentiate instruction to meet learning needs of individual students. Create the classroom environment that values children's ideas (incorporating student decision-making), enhances children's creative and critical thinking, and individualizes instruction as needed by each child.
  • Provide leadership for teaching assistants, student teachers, and student volunteers, and maintain effective communications with parents.
  • Work with researchers and promote an atmosphere of shared inquiry within the Illinois and greater education community.
  • Appropriately assess and document student growth and progress; maintain individual portfolios, and student records. Maintain ongoing and positive communications with parents about all aspects of instruction and progress of their children.
  • Model best practices in teaming. Provide leadership for teaching assistants to build a collaborative team working to address the needs of students in the classroom, and to fulfill programmatic functions.
  • Serve the mission of the university by coordinating class projects, research studies, and teacher training activities in the classroom. Disseminate collaborative and scholarly work of the school.
  • Attend all staff meetings, parent meetings, advisory board meetings and professional development activities as required by the Director.
  • Select curricular materials, supplies, and other resources as needed to support the instruction in the classroom.

Position Requirements and Qualifications:

Education Required: BA/BS degree in early childhood or elementary education, or related field

Education Preferred: Master's degree in early childhood or elementary education, or related field


Experience Required: Teaching experience with young children in a school setting

Experience Preferred: Experience as a cooperating teacher, experience with Reggio Emilia inspired classrooms, and use of The Project Approach inquiry methodology. Experience working with young children with a variety of abilities (including special needs and English Language Learners.)

Training, Licenses or Certifications Required: Teacher Certification (Type 04) or equivalency

Training, Licenses or Certifications Preferred: Illinois State Teacher Certification {Type 04) or equivalency

Knowledge Requirements Preferred: Familiarity with the role of student and cooperating teachers, role of volunteers and researchers in the classroom, Reggio Emilia inspired classrooms, and use of inquiry methodology through The Project Approach.

Salary: Commensurate with experience
