Primary Function of Organization Unit: The North Carolina Clean Energy Technology Center (NCCETC), at NC State University advances a sustainable energy economy by educating, demonstrating and providing research and technical support for clean energy technologies, practices, and policies. This mission is accomplished through work in the following major program areas; Renewable Energy, Clean Power & Industrial Efficiency, Clean Transportation, Green Building, Economic Development, Energy Policy, Workforce Development and Education & Outreach. The N.C. Clean Energy Technology Center serves as a resource for innovative, clean energy technologies through demonstration, technical assistance, outreach and training. The Clean Power and Energy Efficiency Program team at NCCETC assists industrial and commercial businesses and institutional clients solve energy management problems and reach their energy and/or sustainability goals. Through a wide range of educational, technical and financial assistance initiatives, the team broadly supports deployment of cleaner, more resilient distributed energy technology and efficiency options in North Carolina and across the Southeast, including: * Combined Heat and Power * Other Renewable and Non-renewable Distributed Generation * District Energy * Microgrids * Energy Storage Technologies * Energy Efficiency Technologies and Practices for Boilers and Steam Systems, Compressed Air Systems, Energy Intensive Processes, Fuel and Feedstock Flexibility, Motors, Fans, and Pumps, Process Heating, and Energy Management & Automation
Essential Job Duties: The Clean Power and Energy Efficiency Technical Specialist will assist in the performance of NCCETC's activities under the US DOE-funded Combined Heat and Power Southeast Technical Assistance Project as well as to help develop and implement projects, and contribute to delivery of other services, offered by the Center. The individual in this position will work with the program team to complete site assessments for combined heat & power (CHP) and other clean energy technologies for industrial, commercial and institutional facilities. The work also includes identifying and disseminating best practices of CHP project development and operation, as well as policies or programs supporting this investment. The position requires the candidate to be organized and entrepreneurial with a technical familiarity of distributed generation and efficiency technologies. Primary duties will include, but are not limited to: * Conducting outreach to potential end-use clients and providing technical services to evaluate feasibility of investment in distributed generation or efficiency technologies at their site; * Supporting responses to consumers, industry representatives, nonprofit organizations, policymakers, and other stakeholders involved in regulatory proceedings or other relevant policy forums; * Preparing technical reports and papers on issues affecting distributed generation and energy efficiency; * Seeking new project opportunities, and assisting on developing funding proposals that are in line with the mission of the NCCETC; * Supporting administrative functions for assigned projects, including preparation of regular progress reports, quarterly project reports, and budgets as needed and required by funding agencies; and * Updating program technical resources and publications.
Minimum Education/Experience: * Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field; and * Minimum two years of significant work experience in distributed generation project development, including combined heat and power, solar PV, fuel cells, district energy, energy storage and microgrids or other related fields; or relevant advanced degree.

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education: * Advanced degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field; * Engineer in Training (EIT) certification or licensed Professional Engineer (PE); * Candidates with detailed and current, knowledge and skills in technical analysis of distributed generation and energy efficiency project development preferred; * Candidates with detailed understanding of electric and gas utility rates and various charges, ratchets, fees, etc. that affect energy costs preferred; * Candidates with working knowledge of southeastern state and federal policies affecting distributed energy, electricity markets and regulations, and air permitting and compliance preferred; * Experience with building systems energy modeling software such as Trane Trace 700, Carrier HAP or e-Quest; * Experience with state- and federal-funded grant project management and compliance practices; and * Grant writing and marketing experience.
