Job description

Duties: The Research Specialist B will participate in neurotrauma and neurorehabilitation research in the Laboratory of Dr. Randel Swanson within the Center for Neurotrauma, Neurodegeneration and Restoration located within the VA Medical Center adjacent to Penn's main campus. Perform histological, biochemical and molecular biology techniques. Work with large and small animal models, in addition to working with human blood and tissue. Maintain logs, laboratory reports and regulatory documents. Perform inventory analysis, supply purchasing, equipment maintenance and animal colony maintenance. Assist in preparing manuscripts, protocols, and provide data for reports and grants. Oversee and train students and research specialists with less experience.

Qualifications: A Bachelor's Degree in Neuroscience, Biology or a closely related field and 1 to 3 years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience required. Previous experience with large and small animal models, histology, biochemistry and molecular biology techniques is preferred. The successful applicant will have strong organizational skills, excellent written and oral communication skills, and be able to reliably work independently and as part of a team.
