Degree and Area of Specialization:

B.A. or B.S. in biological sciences, engineering or related field required. Advanced degree preferred.



Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:

Minimum of five years experience in some area of biological research. Minimum of 3 years management/supervisory experience required, preferably in a research environment. Must have experience in laboratory safety and employee management and supervision. Ability to work with faculty, graduate students, academic staff, university staff and private industry researchers is vital. Experience in facility management and assuring compliance with research regulations is highly preferred. This position will report directly to the Biotron Director.

Position Summary:

This position will direct the overall administrative and research operations of the University of Wisconsin Biotron. The Assistant Director interacts with the Biotron Director in developing Biotron policies and procedures, and in evaluating Biotron operational needs, strategy and research developments.

The Assistant Director is responsible for the day-to-day management of the research center and acts as the Biotron administrator. The Assistant Director will participate in strategic planning initiatives and policy development. Discuss research projects with investigators to determine the suitability of the Biotron for their research. Schedule research projects in plant, animal or material testing research within the Biotron. Responsible for ensuring the research is conducted in compliance with all applicable regulations including genetically modified organisms (GMO), radiation, chemical, biosafety, occupational health and safety regulations. Responsible for budget development and maintenance, per diem charge backs and public relations. Responsibility for supervision, allocation of duties, hiring, semi-annual performance reviews and managing workplace environment for Biotron staff.

In addition to these duties, the Assistant Director provides oversight for one of the major programs supported by the Biotron, which include the Animal Research Service, the Plant Research Program or another program within the Center. Preference is given to an individual with experience in regulatory oversight and management of an animal research program.
