The Behavioral Health Preventing and Managing Crisis Situations (PMCS) Coach and Instructor will act as a facility champion for implementation of PMCS across all psychiatric units and function as a part of a hospital-wide Crisis Intervention Team. They will work with administrators, faculty, staff to ensure that PMCS is being utilized throughout day-to-day programming and interactions with patients.
The coach/instructor shall be someone who is respected by other staff and who models PMCS values and techniques in their day-to-day work. They will be facilitators to create the culture change needed to achieve success with PMCS. They will become experts in the verbal, nonverbal, and physical techniques and be able to provide guidance related to operationalizing PMCS principles, train others in the PMCS model and utilize their PMCS skills as a part of the house-wide Crisis Intervention Team (CIT).
Duties of the PMCS coach may include the following but are not limited to:Receive training in PMCS upon hire.Attend PMCS “Train the Trainer” Training to become an instructor to assist in the training of faculty and staff in PMCS across Stony Brook and its affiliated institutions.Attend regional training on the PMCS program and The Six Core Strategies© (philosophy, curriculum) when offered and develop coaching/mentoring skills when offered.Participate in the development and implementation of the Crisis Intervention Team that will function across all hospital units.Attend as many incidents as possible to coach faculty and staff through the incident to identify strengths and opportunities for improvement, as well as participate as a CIT member.Ensure constructive debriefings are held, and attend as many debriefings as possible. Consult and advise facility administration on policy, procedure and supervision issues as well as sit in on various committees that affect/are affected by PMCS Conduct formal and informal competency assessments of employee skills in the nonverbal, verbal, and physical techniques In partnership with the SBUH PMCS Coordinator and unit supervisors, develop and implement competency remediation plans when necessary to address an employee's lack of skill in any/all of the de-escalation an physical techniques Coach faculty and staff on effective documentation and document directly as a member of the CIT if required and directed to do soWork with other facility PMCS instructors to adjust refresher trainings as necessary to meet current facility needs Report to the PMCS Program Coordinator quarterly using standardized format for aggregation of data Share with facility leadership successes for consideration to be shared broadly, as well as challenges so that Administration can assist in addressingEngage with patients when the milieu is stable developing relationships and rapport throughout the shift, as well as remain alert for early warning behavioral antecedents that can be de-escalated and ensure effective communication of these events with unit treatment team members.
Required Qualifications:A minimum of an Associate’s Degree or 60 college credits in a Health/Human Services field.A minimum of 3-5 years of full time specialty experience working in an acute, inpatient or emergency psychiatric setting or in a similar hospital or residential setting.Have had some form of crisis prevention training, for example, PMCS, SCIP, CPI or other similar training.Superior verbal calming/de-escalation skills. Have a philosophy of person-centered, trauma-sensitive, and recovery-focused care.Excellent communication skills and teaching ability in informal and classroom settings.Willing to travel to participate in education/training events and as needed to develop PMCS training and coaching skills.Preferred Qualifications:A minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in a Health / Human Service related field.5 years of full time experience working in an acute psychiatric setting. Experience as a trainer, teacher or professor.Specific training in PMCS (Preventing and Managing Crisis Situations).Experience working on a crisis response team.
