Position is responsible for supervising and assisting assigned staff in the performance of police functions and duties. Employees in this class perform police and patrol work in accordance with federal, state, county, and municipal laws and college policies. The sergeant also assigns duties and reviews police reports, incident reports and accident reports for results, accuracy, effectiveness, and conformance with policy. Incumbent also supervises, coordinates, and conducts patrol activities, investigations, accident investigations, special assignments, and emergency response situations as required. Responsible for performing supervision of a full range of public enforcement protection, security, investigation, and administrative functions.


  • Investigate criminal violations, judicial violations, traffic crashes, and citizen complaints.
  • Supervise and protect crime scenes and preserve evidence.
  • Initiates orders and directives to police officers and student police officers as necessary.
  • Assigns and supervises shift duties and ensures the completion of stated duties for the shift by visually and physically inspecting completed duties and assignments as required. (This could be required during periods of extreme weather conditions).
  • Assist police officers and student police officers in responding to alarms at specified locations.
  • Assists and/or directs securing the area and containing any emergency situation, and assists with the evacuation, if necessary, and determining the cause or origin of an emergency.
  • Requires physical stamina and strength and ability to run either getting to the emergency or chasing suspects, or carrying another person out of a building, removing a person from a vehicle that is involved in a traffic accident, etc.
  • Supervises and performs investigations, including surveillance, interviews of witnesses, victims, and suspects, gathering of intelligence, ensures the security of and investigation of crime scenes.
  • Responsible for ensuring officers provide adequate security coverage and police protection for all areas of campus.
  • Initiates corrective action for problems encountered on the shift's tour-of-duty whether in policy or verbally with officers, student police officers, and radio dispatchers.
  • Must be able to perform all duties expected of certified Georgia Police Officer.
  • Ensures that all division administration (forms and reports) is completed in a timely fashion; reviews each officer's reports and initials or signs as applicable; if correct, returns the report or
  • Supervises and performs Community Policing activities.
  • Meets with Housing officials and new students and parents during orientations.
  • Supervises and investigates complaints concerning traffic, parking, and individuals on their shift.
  • Conducts inspections of police personnel and equipment; accounts for police equipment.
  • Performs other duties, as assigned

Minimum and Preferred Qualifications:



  • Must be 21 years of age.
  • Must maintain annual certification requirements.
  • Must be Georgia POST Certified with Basic Law Enforcement Mandate and be in "Good Standing" or able to be POST certified within one year of hire.
  • Passing or qualifying scores are adopted from the requirements set by the Georgia Peace Officers
    Standards and Training Council.
  • Criminal History Check required (No felony convictions or convictions of moral turpitude).
  • Valid Georgia Drivers license.
  • Pass a psychological/polygraph exam.
  • Knowledge, abilities, and skills (Basic Police)
  • Knowledge of law enforcement, criminal law and/or security.
  • Knowledge of criminal and civil law, and criminal procedural law terminology.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish effective relationships with students of varying ages in order to respond to problems or incidents on campus and determine appropriate disciplinary action.
  • Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with supervisor and co-workers.
  • Ability to define elements within federal, state, county, municipal laws and College regulations.
  • Skill in organizing and prioritizing work.
  • Ability to perform the physical aspects of the job.
  • Ability to display professionalism, politeness, and good manners when dealing with co-workers, management, and the public.
  • Ability to work under pressure and time constraints.
  • Ability to learn radio codes and terminology in order to communicate clearly via two-way radio.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions and to read materials written in English.
  • Skill in basic computer knowledge (Word, Excel, Internet)
  • Ability to attend court and provide appropriate testimony on behalf of the college.


  • Currently Georgia POST Certified with Basic Law Enforcement Mandate and in "Good Standing"
  • Bachelor Degree in Criminal Justice or related field
  • Four (4) years of campus policing experience

Physical Requirements

  • Employees in this classification will be required to stand, walk, and sit for one to four hours continuously while monitoring traffic, special events, security assignments, etc., patrolling the campus on foot or in a vehicle.
  • Incumbents will lift and carry fire extinguishers, carry barricades to control traffic and wear duty belt containing flashlight, keys, and radio.
  • Incumbents will push automobiles away from traffic scenes, climb flights of stairs to respond to safety and security related incidents. Run, walk, bend, stoop, kneel to observe or investigate incidents, work on alarm equipment, deliver fire extinguishers or handle barricades.
  • Incumbents must possess dexterity to use keys, alarm programmer, and unlock car doors with "slim-jim" device during emergencies.
  • Visual acuity to observe, investigate, monitor and patrol the campus.
  • Incumbents will speak and listen to employees, students, co-workers and visitors in all aspects of their job.
  • Position may require local travel.
  • Ability to lift and carry files and materials.
  • Ability to move from one office to another office on campus.
  • Adequate vision, hearing and manual dexterity to interact with people in person, on the phone and in writing.
