Description of primary duties and responsibilities:
Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit:
Fayetteville State University's Office of College Access Programs is designed to provide low-income/potential first-generation college students (enrolled in grades 6-12) with academic support services that will enhance their academic skills, thereby ensuring that these students will complete high school and enroll in and complete programs of postsecondary education.
The mission of GEAR UP is to prepare middle and high school students for college through academic preparation programs and scholarships for students, professional development activities for educators, and college access information for students and parents. A total of 1,500 students are served by the GEAR UP Program in Cumberland County at eight target schools.

Primary Purpose of the Position:
The primary purpose of the position is to assist the director in overseeing the implementation of advisement and serves as a Master Academic Coach to ensure the coaching model is implemented at target schools for middle and high school students. The Academic Support Coordinator works with secondary school students to improve their academic preparation and provide academic support sessions to help prepare them for post-secondary education.

Duties and Responsibilities

35% Coordinates Academic Support and Advisement Services: Develop and implement educational and academic support intervention activities to prepare secondary school low-income/first-generation students for post-secondary education (college and career readiness) at four target schools; develop processes and protocols for working with students in a one-on-one and in a small group instructional manner on the college choice process using coaching strategies; research best practices for the implementation of in-school support that focus on non-cognitive skills development for middle and high school participants. Maintains and monitors data on academic progress for secondary school persistence, high school graduation, college acceptance, and FAFSA completion to make data-based decision making.

35% Parent Engagement Research, Assessments & Curriculum Design: Conduct an annual needs assessment to develop curriculum to support parent engagement of GEAR UP students. Research evidence based practices to align with supporting parent capacity to help their children's academic success. Develop workshops and provide instruction to parents on how to monitor school success; support their child with rigorous curricula; help their child to prepare for college; advocate for their child; effective single parenting for school success; and support their child with pursuing a career in STEM. Develop incentive programs to increase parent engagement.

15% Academic Coaching: Provide academic coaching on college preparation, academic survival skills and academic advisement on secondary and post-secondary course selection to program participant and their parents; ensure academic coaching model is implemented with fidelity and is aligned with national standards; monitor academic coaching staff by conducting site visits at local target schools; attend approved coaching and advisement trainings and maintain coaching certification.

10% Personnel: Assist Director with supervising advisement staff by interviewing, recommending and training academic coaches and college mentors.

5% Public Relations - Speak to the community and school personnel on "The mission of the GEAR UP program and serves on committees as appointed by the Director.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
A Master's degree is required in science, math, education, English, psychology, counseling, sociology, business administration, human resource development, communications, social sciences or related fields. A minimum of three to five years of experience working with TRIO, GEAR UP, Math Science Education Network, AVID or other college access programs (including teaching in high school). Must have a minimum of one-year experience teaching, tutoring or providing academic instruction/support to high school and/or college student populations. Must have proven experience in working with populations who are underrepresented in higher education
