This position is temporary and works approximately 20-40 hours per week. Essential Functions: Provide Machining and Fabrication Services, Instruction, Design Assistance, and project assembly in support of University of Miami faculty and student objectives. POSITION SUMMARY: The Machinist Technician serves as a junior member of the machine shop team in support of instruction and research for faculty, students, and team collaborators throughout the University. Team member works under the supervision and mentorship of the Director of Facilities and Senior Machinist. PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: Fabricate specialized and precision mechanical components, models and, prototype equipment for experimental research projects working from engineering drawings, sketches and verbal- instructions. Works with interdisciplinary engineering teams in support of fabrication of special close tolerance components and equipment Assist shop personnel with test validation and troubleshooting experimental prototype equipment construction. With minimal supervision, performs skilled work in set up and operation of standard and CNC metal fabrication equipment, precision measuring tools, machine tools, hand power tools, and other hand tools to manufacture and fit mechanical parts or assemblies Skillfully works with engineering materials, which include various metal alloys, refractory metals, composites, plastics, wood, and epoxy resins Finishes materials to micro-tolerances where required Makes skilled use of fastening, joining, and sealing techniques such as soft and hard soldering, brazing, welding, cementing and adhesive processes Generally organizes own work procedures and initiates stock orders Provide assistance as necessary to orientate and train faculty, students, and new shop personnel. Inspects work to assure functionality and high quality standard. Inspects work to assure product meets high safety standards. Performs tasks outside of job description in support of the Department and the School’s mission. Performs other duties as assigned Basic Qualifications: Must be able to work effectively and collaboratively with machine shop team members, faculty researchers, students and university collaborators. Must have exceptional people skills, be customer oriented and team player. Desire to significantly advance machining knowledge/skills and engage in extensive on-the-job training High school or equivalency required. Graduate of a technical trade school/apprenticeship program related to machine tool technology or a minimum of two years’ experience working in a machine shop environment. Valid State of Florida Class E driver’s license. Ability to stand for long periods and lift up to 50 pounds Ability to work in an environment where the noise level may be moderate to high at times Ability to work independently on assigned tasks Work overtime as needed to meet workload demands and project deadlines Additional Qualifications: Knowledge with MasterCam and Sold Works software strongly preferred Knowledge with Haas CNC Equipment is desirable.
