SUMMARY

GRCC is seeking faculty who possess an interest in working with diverse student populations from a wide range of age, ethnicity, national origin and ability; engage in and develop innovative teaching strategies; effectively assess student learning outcomes; demonstrate a commitment to lifelong learning and professional development; and provide service to our students, the college and our community at large.

Faculty members are responsible to GRCC and to each other for the successful completion of departmental work, as well as work associated with the School of Workforce Development and GRCC as a whole. In addition to the major position responsibilities, it is expected that faculty demonstrated outstanding communication skills, collaborate effectively, use personal initiative to overcome obstacles, and work efficiently to meet deadlines. In an environment where innovation is valued, each faculty member will take responsibility to perform their work in a manner consistent with both the letter and the spirit of GRCC values.           

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Teach OTA courses to include but not limited to: Therapeutic Interventions l, Il, Ill; Disabling Conditions; Level I and Level Il fieldwork experiences and seminar classes.
    • Demonstrate and assist practicing transferring students and weighted mannequin to wheelchairs, floors, mats, toilets, cars, beds, bathtubs, and showers.
    • Demonstrate procedures/therapies including moving equipment, students in wheelchairs, and craft equipment in floor and seated activities/exercises.
    • Respond to emergencies as needed
    • Teach and monitor blood pressure, and operate power wheelchairs, splint heat equipment, and microwave.
    • Instruct and assist a student to differentiate movements in treatment, read markings on instruments and measuring devices, and read printed materials.
    • Demonstrate manual dexterity to manipulative objects and people safely.
    • Demonstrate and assist students in fabricating splints and complete therapeutic projects/activities.
  • Maintain accurate course records and submit related reports as requested.
  • Maintain the OTA's program compliance with ACOTE fieldwork education requirements
  • Serve as a liaison with faculty and fieldwork educators to ensure integration of curricular goals with fieldwork
  • Select, assign, and coordinate fieldwork placements
  • Review performance on a regular basis with students and fieldwork supervisors.
  • Collaborate with the OTA faculty and the OTA Program Director to maintain the integrity of the fieldwork experience.
  • Oversee administrative requirements (i.e., contracts, student health records)
  • Effectively assess, document, and advise students regarding their academic and clinical performance.
  • Communicate orally and in writing with students, faculty, staff, and fieldwork supervisors. Provide instructions and feedback, write syllabus and reports using electronic devices of blackboard and assistive technology.
  • Use sound judgment in regards to safety and ethical practice with self and others.
  • Use good judgment in handling sensitive or difficult situations in a pleasant and professional manner.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to learning cantered environment in the classroom.
  • Incorporate new technologies and methods that enhance teaching and learning into his/her instructional methods.
  • Engage in on-going professional development to maintain expertise in the field and communicate outcomes with faculty and administration.
  • Maintain professional licensure.
  • Advise students on curriculum, academic programs, employment and career goals.
  • Participate in departmental student academic advising plans.
  • Demonstrate sensitivity to and understanding of students from diverse backgrounds with a wide range of abilities.
  • Contribute to the growth and development of the Program and the College by participating in academic program review; curriculum development, evaluation and revision; committee membership; department and advisory committee meetings.
  • Assist the Program Director in the preparation of reports and other required documents.
  • Contribute to program accreditation processes and reports as determined by the OTA Program Director.
  • Assist in marketing and promoting of departmental and college programs and events.
  • Promote the department by creating partnerships with state and local communities, businesses (or health care facilities) and schools.
  • Lead, advise and support adjunct faculty to ensure consistent standards and instructional practices within each course.
  • Adhere to college processes, policies and contractual obligations.
  • Support the College's Strategic Plan through departmental and college action projects as appropriate.

    JOB SPECIFICATIONS

    Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Occupational Therapy or related fields. Candidate with a Bachelor's degree may be considered with the understanding that a master's degree must be achieved prior to receiving tenure.
  • Current or prior experience as an Occupational Therapy Assistant preferred.
  • 4000 hours Occupational Therapy experience in mental health and pediatrics
  • Currently licensed as an Occupational Therapy practitioner and eligible for Michigan license.

    Preferred Qualifications

  • Community College experience or previous experience teaching adult learners.
  • Experience working with Certified Occupational Therapy Assistants and Occupational Therapy Assistant students.
  • Experience in OTA education curriculum design and utilization of education technology.
  • Experience with academic fieldwork coordination.

    Physical Demands

  • Must be able to lift up to twenty-five (25) pounds.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time; as well as occasional sitting, stooping, kneeling or crouching

    Mental Demands

  • Demonstrated initiative and problem-solving abilities to create assignments and tests, provide feedback to student, faculty, fieldwork supervisors, and staff.

    Working Conditions

  • Must be able to work in a classroom and laboratory in an academic setting as well as external clinical sites.
  • Must be able to travel to various clinical sites
