Imaging facility manager

Nature and Purpose
The incumbent will fill the role of operations manager within the Stem Cell Research Center Imaging Facility. Multiple instruments are available in the facility as a shared resource to investigators both on and off campus, subject to approved UCI recharge facility fees. The individual will be responsible for the management and maintenance of the instruments, consultation with anticipated users in the development of their grant proposals and projects, assisting users in developing and testing protocols for both existing and new applications, as well as routine operation of the instruments and sample analysis as needed by a wide variety of users and investigators.
Managing the Imaging Facility includes training and assisting researchers on and off campus in principles and techniques of microscopic cell and tissue imaging and analysis, as well as developing innovative new approaches and protocols to solve complex research problems. The manager will work with SCRC administrative staff to maintain and expand the operations of the imaging recharge facility, including report preparation, assistance with all aspects of booking, monitoring usage, billing and reconciliation.
1) Research (75% Effort)
The operations manager will serve to enable and expand the use of imaging capabilities across a wide variety of faculty members' research programs. The manager will consult with individual faculty members and their research team members to advise and assist in the design and planning of experimental approaches to make maximum use of the available capabilities of the instruments within the facility. The manager is expected to provide solutions for stem cell, regenerative medicine, cell biology, biochemistry, immunology and cancer research utilizing the latest developments in today's rapidly changing technical environment. The manager will provide detailed input into experimental data analysis and interpretation, contributing to manuscript preparation and peer-reviewed publications. As well, the manager will provide advice, guidance and content concerning use of cell and tissue imaging for grant proposal submissions. The manager will be a competent teacher, providing training to a variety of researchers, including undergraduate students, graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, faculty members and stem cell techniques course participants, in appropriate and innovative research use of a wide variety of imaging capabilities. This individual will also be responsible for maintenance and management of a wide variety of shared-use equipment throughout the center, as well as the majority of building management and facilities issues that arise from time to time in the SCRC.
2) Professional Competence and Activity (15% Effort)
In order to maximize the use and utility of the facility, the operations manager is expected to be a regional and national leader in use of various imaging approaches to enable a variety of research programs. The manager will participate in and lead professional development and training activities, meetings, seminars, professional and technical societies, as well as other research and educational organizations to maintain the SCRC facility as a leader in cell and tissue imaging. The manager will also provide input and guidance as needed for the preparation and review of grant proposals, manuscripts, presentations and other publications that include use of the facility and resources.
3) University and Public Service (10% Effort)
The operations manager will serve to promote the SCRC facility and its appropriate use within UCI and throughout an external network of interested individuals. The manager will be a competent teacher, providing training and support to undergraduate students, graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, faculty members and stem cell techniques course participants in appropriate and innovative research use of various imaging capabilities. The manager is expected to participate as a leader in local and regional organizations that facilitate and promote innovative development and use of cell and tissue imaging techniques in stem cell and regenerative medicine research.
The incumbent will have a MS degree and a minimum of three years of experience operating a variety of high-end cell and tissue imaging instruments. The manager will be extremely knowledgeable in all aspects of cell and tissue preparation, staining, imaging and analysis, as well as having high levels of competence in experimental design, analysis and interpretation of imaging data. The selected individual will have completed a variety of training courses and programs specific to operation and management of cell and tissue imaging instrumentation through major vendors. The manager will also have experience in managing instrumentation within the context of a recharge facility.
