Description

As a member of the College Communications Office, the Associate Director of Advancement Marketing’s primary responsibility will be to partner with colleagues throughout the Advancement Division to increase constituent engagement and philanthropic support. He or she will think strategically, write persuasively, and work closely with development, donor relations, gift planning, career center, and alumni relations professionals to help plan, develop, create, and execute campaigns that portray Hamilton as a cause worthy of support and participation.  

Responsibilities:

  • Write compelling copy for Advancement initiatives (e.g., brochures, solicitation letters, emails, website, dedications, citations, etc.) that moves readers to action; must be able to craft a compelling story, especially about the impact giving has on a student’s education.
  • Working in consultation with the Senior Director of Communications Content and Strategy and the Senior Director of Interactive Media, meet with members of the Advancement staff to plan then execute short- and long-term marketing campaigns to increase constituent engagement and philanthropic support. This includes everything from multi-year comprehensive and yearlong Annual Fund campaigns, to giving days, gift planning campaigns, dedications, Senior Gift campaigns, donor recognition initiatives, GOLD (Graduates of the Last Decade) engagement strategies, Fallcoming and Reunion Weekend attendance campaigns, etc.   

Specific priorities include:

  • With the Associate Vice President for Development, prepare and help implement a multiyear and multifaceted strategy, reviewed annually, to achieve goals for a comprehensive capital campaign
  • With the director of the Annual Fund, develop and implement a multifaceted campaign to meet annual fundraising and participation goals
  • With the director of gift planning (and a consultant), develop and help implement a multifaceted annual campaign to increase membership in the Joel Bristol Associates
  • With the director of major gifts, develop and help implement a multifaceted campaign to increase membership in the 1812 Leadership Circle (i.e., top Annual Fund donors)
  • With the director of parent programs, develop and help implement a multifaceted annual campaign to meet fundraising and participation goals for parents
  • With the director of affinity programs, develop and help implement a multifaceted annual campaign
    that increases engagement and philanthropic support for affinity programs
  • With the director of donor relations, develop and help implement a multifaceted annual campaign to thank donors, including programs and projects such as Impact, Your Hamilton Today, and online recognition (Report of Gifts)
  • With the assistant director of the Career Center, develop and help implement a multifaceted annual campaign to increase student engagement
  • Assist Senior Director of Interactive Media in developing video and social media that support marketing campaigns for specific projects
  • Participate in the development and use of alumni personas as they pertain to fundraising and engagement
  • With colleagues, develop a strategy that effectively markets the Advancement Division to the campus community
  • Contribute to the implementation and use of a CRM for fundraising and engagement
  • Assess the effectiveness of various marketing efforts
  • Serve on the Marketing Team, engaging in discussions around the College’s messaging and strategies
  • Participate as a member of the Content Strategy group to help identify and develop content that advances the College’s goals and priorities, especially as they relate to fundraising
  • Follow the College’s editorial and graphic styles
  • Maintain a keen understanding of the College’s primary themes
  • Make reasonable effort to become involved in the Hamilton community
  • Attend one professional development conference, seminar, or workshop every other year
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications, journalism, or a related field, plus a minimum of five to eight years of relevant experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be acceptable

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Must understand and communicate well the mission and strengths of Hamilton. Must appreciate environmental forces affecting higher education and important characteristics of the College’s many audiences, including their relevant interests and needs, and levels of knowledge about and engagement with the College
  • Must think creatively, act strategically, and possess strong writing and editing skills for both digital and print formats. Also essential are proofreading, interpersonal, and time-management skills, extraordinary attention to detail, and the ability to meet deadlines and manage projects
  • Must have a knowledge of marketing concepts and experience implementing integrated marketing initiatives; familiarity and comfort using data to inform planning are essential
  • Must be self-motivated, organized, detail-oriented, and able to handle multiple projects simultaneously
  • Desire to work collaboratively and build productive relationships with colleagues and constituents
  • Ability to keep abreast of evolving communications technologies and determine the most effective way to deliver the College’s messages
  • Ability to communicate Hamilton’s fundraising and engagement themes to its constituents through carefully constructed stories
