Champlain College invites applications, nominations, and expressions of interest for the position of Assistant Vice President for Diversity, Community and Inclusion. The person appointed to this newly created position will work closely with Angela E. Batista, Champlain’s Vice President for Student Affairs and Institutional Diversity and Inclusion, a nationally recognized student affairs and diversity leader who is co-editor of the 2018 NASPA publication Latinx/a/os in Higher Education: Exploring Identity, Pathways and Success.

Champlain College, an educational pioneer since its founding in 1878, is a private, baccalaureate institution that offers professionally focused undergraduate and master’s degree programs and professional certificates on campus and online. Champlain is a national leader in educating students to become intellectual leaders, skilled practitioners, effective professionals, and global citizens. The College is located in Burlington, Vermont, a warm and hospitable city, rich in ethnic culture, and home to families from more than 60 countries. Located two hours from Montréal, Canada, Burlington has been consistently ranked as one of the country’s most livable small cities according to a number of national surveys and magazine reports based on criteria such as healthfulness, lifestyle, and economic potential. Champlain’s main residential campus is located on 22 acres in Burlington’s Hill Section, where 2,200 traditional undergraduate students from 44 states and 22 countries are enrolled, in addition to 2,950 graduate and continuing professional students. Champlain also has study abroad campuses in Dublin, Ireland and Montréal as well as global partnerships with institutions around the world.

Reporting directly to the Vice President for Student Affairs and Institutional Diversity and Inclusion, the Assistant Vice President for Diversity, Community and Inclusion (AVP) will lead student diversity and inclusion programs and initiatives within the Division of Student Life, serve as an advocate for all students, and work to foster an institutional climate across the College that supports and encourages inclusive and global engagement. The AVP will oversee a portfolio that includes Accessibility Services, the Office of Diversity and Inclusion, Student Engagement and Success, and the Women’s and Gender Center. The AVP will serve as a strategic partner to the Vice President as she enacts leadership as Champlain’s senior diversity officer and continues to design and implement a comprehensive diversity and inclusion strategy. The AVP will contribute to the development of the institution’s short- and long-range diversity and inclusion goals and objectives, assisting with the implementation and delivery of initiatives to advance institutional diversity and inclusion, including faculty, staff and student learning. The position will also contribute to student transition and success initiatives, serving on the College’s Title IX team, coordinating the College’s bias response and student grievance processes, and serving as a member of a forthcoming student success team.

Minimum qualifications include an earned master’s degree, five to seven years of progressive leadership experience in higher education, and a strong record of accomplishment in implementing strategic diversity and inclusion initiatives and fostering student engagement and success. Other qualifications include:

  • demonstrated commitment and experience working to advance campus climate issues, including equity, diversity, and inclusivity within a higher education setting;
  • experience working across a wide range of constituencies with a high degree of diplomacy (e.g., students, faculty, administrative colleagues, parents, community residents, alumni, etc.);
  • knowledge of and experience with working effectively with varied student populations including first-generation students, students from various socio-economic backgrounds, students from diverse cultural, religious, and ethnic identities, international students, students with disabilities, veterans, and trans and LGBTQ students;
  • ability to build and manage teams and demonstrated organizational skills, including the ability to plan, establish priorities, and handle multiple tasks and projects;
  • demonstrated commitment to service, support of the academic mission, and continued advancement of the College;
  • excellent collaboration and consensus-building abilities; and
  • genuine passion for working with and supporting students in their academic, professional, and personal development.
