Penfield Library at the State University of New York at Oswego invites recent graduates from accredited MLS/MLIS degree programs to apply for the Resident Librarian Program. The position is a full time/12-month, two-year appointment, non-renewable, entry-level librarian position.
The Resident Librarian is a position at the assistant librarian rank, and includes support for professional development and mentorship. The position will prepare the Resident Librarian to be highly qualified and competitive in their search for a tenure-track position in an academic library.

Description of Responsibilities:
The Resident Librarian program will provide a broad introduction to the field of academic librarianship, with assignments in reference, instruction, and project-based collection development. In the second year, the Resident Librarian will complete a project based on their professional interests and our current needs. Working independently or with a colleague, the Resident Librarian will develop, complete, and report research with the prospect of presenting at a professional conference or publishing in a professional journal.
Duties will also include:
- Participate in Research Help Desk rotation for on-site and virtual reference, including some evening and weekend shifts.
- With guidance from the Instructional Team, plan, develop, and teach library instruction sessions for courses and individuals.
- Display a strong service orientation in interactions with students and faculty/staff colleagues.
- Develop and assist with creation of instructional learning objects, including web-based guides and tutorials, using innovative techniques.
- Contribute to project-based collection development.
- Stay informed of new and changing resources, trends, and methods in instruction, reference, and research assistance.
- Collaborate with a variety of internal library colleagues, classroom faculty, and campus partners.
- Participate in library and institutional committees, as well as in the activities of local and regional professional associations, including attending workshops and webinars.
- Engage in educational opportunities to increase awareness and understanding of diversity and inclusion.
- In the second year, work on a project based on professional interests and Penfield Library needs. The intention will be to present results at a professional conference or in a professional journal.
In addition, this position will be expected to display a demonstrated potential for excellence in librarianship, scholarship and service; commitment to undergraduate and graduate education, and possess communication and interpersonal skills sufficient to work effectively with an increasingly diverse array of students and colleagues.
- Master’s degree in Librarianship/Information Science from an ALA-accredited program (or foreign equivalent) by time of appointment, preferably received within the last 12 months. Note: early-career librarians working outside of academic librarianship (for up to 24 months post-MLIS) will also be considered.
- Demonstrated interest or engagement with social justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion issues, through professional or community experience.
- Oral and written communication and interpersonal skills to work effectively with an increasingly diverse array of students and colleagues, including basic presentation skills.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively with colleagues.
- Familiarity with trends and issues in academic librarianship.
- Flexibility and motivation in the face of changing assignments and projects.
- Evidence of effective adaptation to and use of emerging technologies and software.

Penfield Library is a dynamic, innovative, and learning-centered environment serving students, faculty and staff at SUNY Oswego. The Library supports campus curriculum, teaching, and research, and is a member of the SUNY Library Consortium as well as the ACRL Diversity Alliance.
