The Department of Spanish, Italian and Portuguese in the College of Arts & Sciences at the University of Virginia invites applicants for a one-year nonrenewable position as Assistant Professor of Spanish, General Faculty. Field of specialization is Peninsular Spanish literature and culture, subfields of specialization and period open, though modern preferred. The appointment will run over the academic year 2018-2019, with an anticipated start date of August 25, 2018.
Candidates must have a strong commitment to undergraduate education and be qualified to teach upper-level undergraduate courses in Spanish language, literature and culture (3000- and 4000-level courses), with a workload of five courses over the academic year (with the balance of duties [17%] being comprised of research on the faculty member's own project). They must also possess native or near-native fluency in Spanish. A Ph.D. in hand at the time of application is preferred, but candidates must hold a Ph.D. by June 15, 2018 at latest.
