University of Texas (UT) Health Austin and its outpatient Pain Management Integrated Practice Unit (IPU) invite applications for an, Attending Physician, functioning as a Pain Medicine Physician.

We are seeking a highly self-motivated yet team-oriented individual with a commitment to evidence-based clinical care; rehabilitation program development and implementation; teaching; and research, to join the outstanding interdisciplinary faculty and staff at our Academic Health Care System, who collectively strive to deliver exemplary and outstanding value-based, patient-centered care. Our Pain Management IPU is a comprehensive, interdisciplinary, and team-based program that assesses and cares for adult patients with a wide variety of chronic pain conditions, including those associated with the various types of cancer, and chronic post-surgical pain.

Essential Responsibilities and Functions:

The primary role of this position is to collaborate within an interdisciplinary team of other physicians, nurses, physician assistants, psychologists, social workers, physical therapists, and pharmacists, to formulate and implement comprehensive assessment and treatment plans for complex adult pain patients. These individualized management plans are intended to alleviate pain; to maintain, improve, or restore physical and psychosocial function; and to prevent further debilitation and disability in these patients.

A central role of this position is to provide onsite assessment, reassessment, and initial as well as appropriately modified treatment modalities, along with recommendations and resources for home-based or other offsite follow-up modalities for patients, living either in close proximity or geographically distant from our clinics.

This will require maintaining written documentation and generating charge capture for all patient care services rendered, including the initial assessment, follow-up visits, discharge summary, and telephone calls, consistent with organizational standards. This will necessitate developing and maintaining working relationships with health care providers in the community to create a network of aligned providers.

Onsite follow-up pain management care is provided for individuals living close to our facilities, at the individual level and/or group-based level (e.g., exercise classes in combination with cognitive behavioral therapies co-delivered by a Pain Physical Therapist and Pain Social Worker/Psychologist). The Pain Management Physician will work primarily in the UT Heath Austin outpatient Health Transformation Building but selected services may be provided and procedures performed at Seton Healthcare Family facilities.

Qualifications
Required Criteria: The successful candidate must:
  1. Hold one of the following:
    • Doctor of Medicine (MD) from an institution in the United States accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) or from an institution in Canada accredited by the Committee on Accreditation of Canadian Medical Schools in cooperation with the LCME; OR
    • Doctor of Osteopathy (DO) from an institution in the United States accredited by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA)
  2. Hold or eligible for a full, unrestricted medical license issued by the Texas Medical Board.
  3. Have successfully completed a residency in Anesthesiology, Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (PM&R), or Neurology, accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and thus be board-eligible or board-certified by the respective certifying body recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS).
  4. Have successfully completed a minimum one (1) year fellowship in Pain Medicine, accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and thus be board-eligible or board-certified by the American Board of Anesthesiology.
  5. Have expertise in the entire spectrum of medical management of chronic pain conditions and disorders.
  6. Have expertise in the entire spectrum of interventional pain blockade and associated modalities, including fluoroscopic, ultrasound, and computed tomography (CT) guidance.
  7. Demonstrate the ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with a variety of other health care professionals (i.e., physicians, nurses, psychologists, social workers, physical therapists, pharmacists).
  8. Present a positive, compassionate, and professional attitude when engaging with patients, clinical faculty/staff, and the local, regional and national professional communities.
  9. Possess excellent interpersonal skills; written and oral communication skills; organizational, planning, follow-up/follow-through, and time management skills.
  10. Possess strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  11. Ability to work in a fast-paced, multi-provider practice environment.


Desired Criteria: The ideal candidate should:

  1. Have a minimum of five (5) years of post-graduate, independent clinical experience, preferably in a high-volume, outpatient-based pain management clinical setting.
  2. Have substantial experience and expertise in the sub-specialty of cancer pain management.
  3. Have experience in palliative and supportive care, which can include participation and collaboration as a clinical team member.
  4. Have experience delivering care as a member of an interdisciplinary pain management team.
  5. Have a working knowledge of and/or experience with value-based healthcare delivery.
  6. Be bilingual in English and Spanish.
  7. Have a current or an interest in developing a line of clinical scholarly inquiry of some aspect of the Pain Medicine and Pain Management, preferably within the context of a biopsychosocial framework.
  8. Be an active member of the American Pain Society (APS), American Academy of Pain Medicine (AAPM), American Society of Interventional Pain Physicians (ASIPP), Western Pain Society, Eastern Pain Society, and/or International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP).
