Montgomery College, Workforce Development & Continuing Education (WDCE), located in Rockville, MD, has need for a full-time Accountant, position #S05297. This position is alternate funded through the America's Promise Grant through December 31, 2020. The normal work schedule is Monday - Friday 8:30 am - 5:00 pm.

Job Summary:

Under supervision/direction, performs professional accounting work, including auditing, analyzing, maintaining, and verifying fiscal records and reports, preparing financial and audit reports, and reconciling general ledger accounts. The purpose of the work is to perform specific tasks such as the checking of data, comparing reports to source documents, or authorizations against transactions. Work affects the accuracy and completeness of ledgers and reports. This accounting work requires the understanding and application of formal accounting principles and practices to ensure financial record keeping and procedures meet acceptable standards. Assignments usually consist of specific tasks relating to the practical application of theory and basic principles of accounting in the context of the regulations, organization, requirements, automated systems, and other characteristics of a finance/accounting operation. Decisions regarding what needs to be done follow well accepted accounting principles and practices.

The Accountant I is distinguished from the Accountant II by the latter's performance of the full range of assigned tasks, under less supervision, while exercising discretion and independent judgment within established guidelines. Although the Accountant I exercises independent judgment in the application of accounting techniques, set procedures and standards are typically followed and work is generally reviewed by a supervisor or lead. Guidelines are provided in the form of laws, precedents, procedures, policies, and
professional association standards.

Job Description

Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Review, maintain and reconcile accounts, making adjustments, corrections, and journal entries as appropriate; prepares periodic and special reports and statements.
  • Perform reconciliation activities of government withholdings and direct lending disbursements.
  • Prepares monthly and year end close transactions
  • Traces discrepancies in accounts, financial documents, data entries, reports and records
  • and makes corrections.
  • Compiles data from account records to create and maintain computer spreadsheets for posting, maintaining, analyzing, and reporting financial information.
  • Researches and processes charge-backs, assist with year-end external reporting.
  • Responds to inquiries from College units, vendors, and financial institutions
  • regarding accounts and transactions; searches account records and transaction files for information to answer inquiries.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or a related field. An equivalent combination of education and training experience may be substituted.
  • Minimum of one year of professional accounting experience.
  • Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) recommendations; of laws and regulations governing accounting procedures and systems.
  • Knowledge of PC hardware and software capabilities and accounting applications.
  • Demonstrate familiarity working under the "Uniform Administrative Requirements, Cost Principles and Audit Requirements for Federal awards
  • Skill in operating within an integrated application business environment (i.e., all business applications are integrated into one system and requires communication and understanding of all).
  • Skill in using standard office equipment, including computers, computer applications, and software, communicating accounting information, both in writing and orally.
  • Ability to maintain a group of accounts, and organize work to set priorities and meet deadlines, communicate and work effectively with others within and outside of the organization, to interpret financial and accounting data, and provide appropriate analysis for management's use in decision making.
