Degree and Area of Specialization:
BS Medical Microbiology, Medical Technology, Bacteriology. Ability to meet CLIA Laboratory Testing Personnel Standards required.
Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:
Medical Technology, Microbiology, Virology, and/or Immunology College Laboratory Course Work required.
License or certificate:
Ability to pass Select Agent Certification required. Ability to pass a visual color screening test required.
This position is in the Communicable Disease Division (CDD) of the Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene (WSLH). The employee in this position functions as one of a team of microbiologists and lab technicians in the Specimen Receiving, Clinical Orders and Customer Service Laboratory areas under close, progressing to limited, supervision. Duties of the position include, but are not limited to, opening and accessing patient and reference samples, labeling specimen containers, processing and aliquoting samples, entering specimen data and communications into the CDD Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS), generating reports and worksheets, sending sample collection materials to customers, answering telephone customer inquiries and performing other routine laboratory activities. This position participates in ongoing quality improvement /quality assurance activities and the instruction of laboratorians, students and medical personnel in laboratory procedures. Primary work hours are 7:45 A.M. to 4:30 P.M., Monday through Friday, including weekend and holiday work on a rotational basis.
The employee in this position is expected to use the tools and principles of quality management in performing their daily work by demonstrating exceptional customer service by establishing and maintaining effective professional relationships with managers, supervisor, coworkers, and all customers. Other expectations include providing constructive feedback for the purpose of continuous improvement in a manner that is supportive of WSLH and its mission, using data collection tools as appropriate, using effective team skills to contribute to the efficient operation of the work unit and presenting ideas, carrying out assignments, and providing information as required. Participate in continuous learning through professional development activities is also strongly encouraged.
A successful visual color screening test is required prior to an offer of employment. This position requires travel as needed, and applicants must have experience delivering lectures/presentations. Applicants must be available for on-call public health emergencies, weekends and holidays.
This is a 24 month fixed term Terminal Position. If long-term funding is secured this position may become renewable.
