Position Description: The development officer engages, cultivates, solicits, and stewards alumni, parents, and friends who have the capacity to make a gift of $50,000 or more to the University of Puget Sound. Working directly with colleagues in the offices of alumni relations, annual giving, corporate and foundation relations, donor relations, and research, the development officer serves as a member of the capital giving team and reports to the director of capital giving.

  • Solicit alumni, parents, and friends for outright and irrevocable deferred endowment and facilities commitments of $50,000 or more for identified Puget Sound fundraising objectives;
  • Promote, discuss, illustrate and solicit planned giving opportunities with prospective donors, as appropriate;
  • Solicit gifts, as appropriate, for the Puget Sound Alumni, Parent, and Friends Funds in coordination with colleagues in the Office of Annual Giving;
  • Meet regularly with prospective donors on and off campus to build enduring and trusting relationships between the prospects and the university;
  • Develop written engagement and solicitation strategies for all assigned prospects with capacity ratings of $100,000 or more;
  • Move prospective donors through the traditional cultivation and solicitation cycle with appropriate deliberate speed;
  • Document the results of all substantive contacts with constituents via contact reports; and
  • Represent the University of Puget Sound in a consistently professional and ethical manner.

The development officer should possess the following qualifications and skills:
  • Experience in fund raising, preferably at a liberal arts institution;
  • A proven record of successful face-to-face gift solicitation;
  • Significant experience working productively with alumni and parent volunteers;
  • The ability to work and communicate effectively, orally and in writing, with a broad range of internal and external constituents including faculty, staff, students, alumni, parents, and friends of the university;
  • The ability to work independently, solve problems, handle confidential information, and navigate sensitive situations;
  • Highly developed computer skills including experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint as well as constituent relations software such as Sage Millennium;
  • The willingness and ability to travel frequently;
  • Excellent organizational and planning skills as well as superior attentiveness to detail;
  • A bachelor's degree.
  • Ability to respectfully work, communicate and provide leadership within a diverse campus community
