Job Summary:

Under the direction of the Assistant Vice Provost for Student Engagement, the Director of First Year Programs and Family Engagement serves as a critical connecting point for our first year students and their families. From admission to graduation, the Director is responsible for establishing and managing successful relationships that result in increased student success and family affinity for the student experience at USF. Through extensive knowledge in student development and programming/event management, development, and relationship management, the Director applies creative and strategic thinking to the planning processes in order to increase family involvement and create an engaged development prospect pool. The area also receives programming and administrative support from the Student Engagement Unit, Program Manager, and Program Assistant positions.

Job Responsibilities:

New Student Programs
Leads the planning and implementation of New Student Orientation programs with the various campus entities including Strategic Enrollment Management and the Academic Schools and Colleges.
Oversees the development and implementation of comprehensive orientation experiences, including New Student Orientation, New Student Convocation, and Pre-Orientation Programs with a variety of campus partners, students, and stakeholders.
Manages and implements broad and effective training for more than 40 student leaders (Get Orientated Team, GO Team) in collaboration with partners across campus, including spring and fall training sessions.
Supervises two Graduate Interns.
Develops and manages an effective outreach and communication strategy for new students and parents.
Directs the assessment of Orientation Programs and trainings, including instrument design and administration, data analysis, and programmatic adjustments.
Chairs the Orientation Steering Committee and oversees all orientation subcommittees, including but not limited to: Graduate Student Orientation, Black Student Orientation, Family Orientation, International Student Orientation, and First Generation Student
Oversees and manages all aspects of the New Student Orientation budgets of approximately $400,000.
Provides vision, direction, and evaluation and assessment to implement a coordinated Orientation and Welcome Week Experience for first year, transfer, and special populations of students.
Provides vision, direction, and evaluation of all incoming, required pre-orientation trainings and programs.
Develops new initiatives related to new student transition opportunities.

Supports Division of Student Life in all USF101 efforts. USF101 is a 1-unit course that is offered to all new first-year students. Students who are enrolled meet weekly to engage with each other, an instructor, and a peer mentor to share the first year experience
Assists in recruitment, selection, and training of faculty and staff to teach USF101.
Oversees and manages all aspects of the USF101 budget (over $100,000).
Supports the logistics and efforts of the USF101 Faculty Director.
Assesses USF101 program and analyzes compiled data.
Selects, train and supervises USF101 Peer Mentors.
Understands and addresses the developmental needs of new students in transition within the USF community.
Assists students in formulating academic and personal goals for their first year and in planning for their adjustment to the college experience.
Researches best practices in first year seminars to inform program development and evaluation of USF101.

Family Programs
Equips families with the information and resources they need to support their students.
Provides opportunities for families to stay connected and involved in their student’s education experiences. Leads the planning and implementation of Family Orientation and Family Weekend.
Provides prompt responses and support to family members of USF students who seek assistance via telephone, email, and forms of social media.
Oversees the creation and production of publications/newsletters and a robust family webpage.
Oversees and manages all aspects of Family Weekend budget ($20,000 in revenue and $75,000 in general operating).
Provides staffing and support for the Vice Provost for Student Life Parent’s Council.

Professional Development and Support for Campus Initiatives
Participates in and leads divisional and University-wide committees.
Ensures collaboration across departments on services and programs designed to promote new student engagement.
Participates in a variety of division-wide and University-wide committees focused on student transition and first-year experiences.

Other Relevant Duties
Participate in department/division activities including meetings, retreats, and staff development.
Collaborate with professional colleagues at other university and educational organizations to share information for the purpose of enhancing content and delivery of department programs, services, and resources to students.
Participate in committees, task forces, and special projects or other duties as requested by the Assistant Vice Provost for Student Engagement.

Minimum Requirements:

Master’s degree in Student Affairs Administration, Higher Education Administration, or related field.
Minimum 5 years of professional experience, preference for experience in orientation and family programs in higher education in collaboration with Student Affairs.
Knowledge of trends and issues facing students from low-income, underrepresented, multiracial, multiethnic, mixed-race, mixed-ethnic, immigrant, refugee, disability, and/or LGBTQA+ backgrounds.
Demonstrated experience with and/or commitment to working effectively with students, parents, faculty and staff from diverse backgrounds, in support of an inclusive and welcoming environment.
Strong organization, time management, budget management, and collaboration skills.
Proven experience in special events management.
Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.
Demonstrated understanding of the role of philanthropy in higher education.
Ability to travel.
Work experience with an emphasis on parent/family programming.
Experience responding to student crises/emergencies.
Experience working in a large, complex organization.
A demonstrated interest in, and commitment to, the mission of a Jesuit Catholic institution.
