Research Scientist, HCESC - Coordinated Science Laboratory (V1800004)
The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign seeks a Research Scientist. Duties: Assist PI with HCESC (Health Care Engineering Systems Center) research projects, and research personnel, such as research assistants and postdoctoral research associates, by delegating tasks and work objectives, work direction of research being performed in the lab, and to provide feedback to the Principal Investigator for performance evaluations, Proposal preparation in response to other research opportunities for the Center, Maintain the HCESC laboratories by ensuring research equipment is functioning properly and maintain the lab schedules on various simulation projects, Perform research on medical simulation, robot assisted surgery, and brain commuter interfaces that will be used to enhance surgical procedures which will be carried out in areas ranging from neurosurgery to minimally invasive surgery, Create prototypes of medical devices and systems such as developing intelligent robotic systems for surgical applications; creating new tools to enhance medicine, new assistive devices that can be worn over the arms or legs, new surgery techniques involving robotic tools, and new diagnostic interfaces, Develop intelligent robotic systems for surgical applications which will be used to develop new tele-robotic systems that can be remotely controlled by a surgeon or a medical practitioner to carry out various procedures, Develop robotic software, hardware, network protocols and new haptic force feedback algorithms, Develop new methods to construct complex surgical motions for robotic surgeries by discovering ways to improve the range of motion on medical devices and how they can better assist with surgical issues, this includes: motion in 3D space which mimics the complex motion of human wrist and fingers, Develop new modalities to develop spatial awareness in medical robotic systems by developing new visual and machine learning algorithm for the robot so that robot can understand where its arms are located in space, Program and test redundant and dexterous robots by testing new robots to see if it can match the required motions based on the algorithms, Study assistive robotic systems as symbiotic robotic system, cognitive robotics, Develop the kinematics, dynamics and controls as it pertains to how robotic devices operate, Create algorithms and mathematical modeling pertaining to healthcare engineering which is an abstract model that uses mathematical language to describe the behavior of a system, understanding of algorithms is needed to create the mathematical modeling systems, Collect, analyze, and classify EEG data from physicians. The analyzed data will to be used for controlling assistive surgical robots using the intentions of the physicians. Occasional travel to Jump Simulation Center/OSF Health Care System, Peoria, Illinois. Requirements: Master's in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Computer Science. One (1) year of experience with development of robotic devices, dynamics, control and programming these devices as well as manufacturing of complex devices. Full-time.
