About the Unit
CERN Technologist: Help with the maintenance and calibration of custom-built electronic equipment on the ATLAS experiment at CERN, a large scientific detector system for Elementary Particle Physics. The position will be located in Geneva, Switzerland and is a one year assignment.
CERN Technologist: An individual is sought who will be responsible for helping with the maintenance and calibration of custom-built electronic equipment on the ATLAS experiment at CERN. This is a large scientific detector system for elementary particle physics. The is located in Geneva, Switzerland and has a term of one year.
- Detector Calibration- Data from the calorimeter section of the detector is acquired from 20,000 analog readout channels. The response of the individual channels can be measured by injecting standardized test signals. These data must be analyzed to determine the calibration constants of each channel as well the proper operation over the full dynamic range of signal amplitudes.
- This information must be monitored and updated on a weekly basis and anomalies diagnosed.
- Study of Test Systems - A special laboratory has been set up with a slice of the operational detector. This system is used to track stability, understand anomalies, and to test new software and hardware techniques.
- Will work with the electronics, power supplies and mechanical systems, which constitute this test setup; may also work with the control software, if needed.
- On-Detector Maintenance - During a few months each year the ATLAS detector is taken off-line for maintenance work. These individuals will work with the maintenance team to repair any readout channels with faulty behavior.
- Problem solving, multiple concurrent tasks, reading instruments, detailed work, reasoning, oral and written communication skills, organizational skills and formal presentations of results to coworkers.
- Work independently and efficiently, work with people of diverse cultures and background, prioritize work and meet deadlines is required.
- Exposure to moving machinery; Ability to operate equipment necessary to perform job.
- Bachelor's degree or higher in physics with good grades is required.
- Courses in electronics and elementary particle physics, preferred.
- Experience with computer systems is required.
- Experience working with complex instruments in a physics laboratory, preferred.
Technical Knowledge or Skills:
- Experience working with complex instruments in a physics laboratory is preferred
- Knowledge of C++ and Linux systems is preferred
Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:
- Outdoor weather exposure
- Ability to climb ladders/scaffolds- the on-detector maintenance will require climbing on scaffolding and working in constrained spaces. The individuals must have sufficient strength and dexterity for this work, with the ability to maintain balance at heights of 2 stories to 5 stories
- Ability to bend, crouch, or stoop, to carry or lifts loads of 25 to 49 lbs., to sit or stand for up to 2 hours, to operate equipment necessary to perform job
