Job Description:
Reports to:Mills Educational Talent Search Project Director

Historical Overview
Mills College is home to the Mills Educational Talent Search TRIO Program (METS) and serves approximately 600 students in Oakland each year. TRIO Programs are educational opportunity outreach programs designed to motivate and educationally support students from disadvantaged backgrounds. The METS program provides academic, college prep, career exploration, and financial literacy services to its participants. Our goal is to support students through high school graduation and help them gain access to a postsecondary education. The Summer Enrichment Program will provide academic instruction in core subjects:English, Sciences, and Mathematics. The METS Summer Enrichment Program will also provide courses and workshops exploring various topics: Life Skills, Study Skills, College Preparation, Career Exploration, and Cultural Awareness.

Summer Enrichment Program Description
The METS Program offers a five-week summer academic enrichment program for students entering grades 6th-12th. The METS summer program will be conducted at Life Academy, a local high school in the Oakland Unified School District (OUSD).Staff orientations will take place June12th-13th. Instruction for the METS Summer Program is scheduled to begin Monday, June 18th and continues through Friday, July 20th. The daily instructional schedule is 8:30am-2:30pm, Monday -Friday. The student/parent orientation on Wednesday, June 13th, and the METS staff closing session on Monday, July 23rd are mandatory events for all summer staff. Exact times to be announced prior to hiring.

Under the general supervision of the METS Project Director, the Program Assistant/Tutor is responsible for assisting with all operational aspects of the METS Summer Enrichment Program. This position requires someone who has passion, innovation, and competencies working with the complexities associated with first generation, low income, historically disadvantaged youth, families, and communities.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Assist in providing comprehensive academic advising, cultural awareness, and diversity workshops to summer participants.
  • Assist in providing a transcript evaluation and develop an individual academic plan (IAP) with summer participants.
  • In collaboration with Program Director and METS team, assist with coordination and implementation of all facets of the METS Summer Enrichment Program.
  • In collaboration with Program Director and METS team plan and supervise all METS related activities, events, field trips and college tours.
  • Support the Summer Program Instructors by implementing classroom management policies and procedures necessary to maintain a productive, effective classroom environment.
  • Provide individual and group tutorial sessions for student participants.
  • Plan and facilitate team-building activities during breaks and scheduled sessions.
  • Participate in METS staff meetings.
  • Attend staff orientation, program activities, & final program evaluation closing session.
  • Perform other related duties as needed.
Requirements:
Education & Experience
  • Good academic standing at college or university currently attending.
  • Experience working for a TRIO Program or similar program a plus.
  • Ability to exhibit strong customer service orientation for all levels of College constituencies and members of the public.
  • Ability to take appropriate steps to promote and sustain effective working relationships within a diverse multicultural environment
  • Ability to work safely in compliance with College Injury and Illness Prevention Plan
Skills & Knowledge
  • Familiarity with TRIO Programs and the Oakland Unified School District as well as Oakland community programs and services dedicated to working with youth and their families.
  • Excellent written, oral and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Must be available to work evenings and weekends as needed.
  • Ability to understand and enforce all METS Program policies.
  • Be punctual, positive, motivated, engaging.
  • Able to multi-task, model behavior that is expected of students, take initiative to address unexpected program or participant needs
Additional Information:
This is an temporary, exempt, full-time position. Salary is commensurate with experience. This assignment includes state-mandated benefits including Social Security, State Disability Insurance, Workers' Compensation Insurance, and Unemployment Insurance.
