Position Summary

Basic Function

The College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) at Michigan State University (MSU) invites applications for the position of Psychologist I. The CVM Psychologist reports to the Assistant Dean of Student Wellness and Engagement and provides coordination for mental health and wellness programming to students in the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) and Veterinary Technology programs. This is 10-month, off-date position funded for two years from date of hire with possible extension contingent upon funding renewal.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities

  • Conducts individual consultations and time-limited psychotherapy to students in the DVM and Veterinary Technology programs.
  • Provides crisis management for students and consults with faculty on student behavioral health concerns.
  • Develops and implements psycho-educational outreach programs for professional students.
  • Makes referrals to campus and community services, including MSU Counseling and Psychiatric Services, the Resource Center for Persons with Disabilities, and other mental health resources.
  • Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

    Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing more than four years of graduate study beyond a Bachelor's degree, such as a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology or Counseling Psychology, one year pre-doctoral full time internship (by a licensed psychologist), six months to one year of related experience in psychotherapy in a clinic/agency environment, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Full licensure as a Psychologist by the State of Michigan, or license eligible in the State of Michigan within three months from date of hire.

    Desired Qualifications

    Work experience in counseling of college-age/professional students, consultation, outreach and preventive education in a university counseling center setting and/or experience in a non-university clinical setting, including community mental health or inpatient treatment settings.
