Position: Assistant Professor, User Experience and Outreach Librarian
Stetson University seeks an innovative, collaborative, and dynamic User Experience and Outreach Librarian for a full-time tenure-track appointment as an assistant professor. Working collaboratively, the User Experience and Outreach Librarian will be responsible for the development and implementation of programming, activities, and projects designed to improve the overall library experience. The librarian in this position will work to develop relationships with the library’s various user communities, both in-person, online, and in social media. The successful candidate will be expected to meet the standards for librarianship, scholarship, and service outlined in the University’s tenure and promotion policies.
Master of Library & Information Science (MLS/MLIS) from an ALA-accredited institution required. Second Master’s degree preferred. The ideal candidate understands learning theory, learning technologies, library user behavior, space design best practices, marketing, demographics, and statistics. Demonstrated expertise in communication and outreach is especially desired. All Stetson librarians are expected to contribute to general reference and research services and function well as a member of a collaborative team. In addition, the successful candidate should have the following: demonstrated ability or potential to engage in publication and professional service to meet University tenure and promotion requirements; knowledge of best practices, issues, and trends in user-centered design in academic libraries, including trends in teaching and learning, online learning, and information literacy; demonstrated teaching or presentation experience; the ability to contribute to a growing and changing library; demonstrated skill with a variety of online tools, especially website management systems; effective communication, marketing, interpersonal, organizational, and analytical and assessment skills; ability to manage projects and meet deadlines; and the ability to work flexibly and creatively in a changing environment.
This position reports to the Director of Public Services. Duties include on-call research assistance shifts, including some nights and weekends, and information literacy instruction. The User Experience and Outreach Librarian will be expected to give special attention to the following:
- Coordinate and assess the library’s User Experience efforts, including working with librarians and staff on development of new services, user-centered space design, and other aspects of the physical and online library that enhance the user experience.
- Use skills and knowledge about library users, including data gained from usability testing, focus groups, and surveys to understand the library user experience and develop recommendations to improve customer services.
- Collaborate with the Learning and Information Literacy Librarian and the Library Technology Specialist to enhance the online library user experience.
- Design and engage in activities to understand what kind of library collections, services, and support the faculty and students need and how they want to receive those services.
- Stay informed of trends related to user-centered design, the development of online library interface capabilities, and website enhancements.
- Conduct outreach activities with faculty, students, and staff to ensure that library users are aware of collections, services, and technologies available to them.
- Effectively communicate the library’s goals, services, and news to various campus constituencies, as well as to outside constituencies as appropriate.
The duPont-Ball Library:
The duPont-Ball Library (http://stetson.edu/library) has a collection of approximately 250,000 print volumes and a large collection of electronic journals, databases, and e-books, as well as a collection of scores and recordings in support of the School of Music. The library staff includes 8 library faculty members and 16 support staff. The library is a member of LYRASIS and uses OCLC’s WMS integrated system. The ongoing library fundraising program has resulted in library endowments totaling more than $3 million. Librarians are tenure-track faculty members who hold leadership positions on campus committees and are actively engaged in scholarly activities, professional organizations and service.
