Primary Function of Organization Unit: The Department of Insurance and Risk Management provides a centralized organization within the University to develop and direct a wide array of very complex proactive insurance and risk management programs aimed at reducing and managing the risk of loss in the University's financial and human resources. The Insurance and Risk Management operation encompasses the entire university population, operations, programs and real estate property across the state.

Essential Job Duties: The Director of Insurance and Risk Management is a senior leadership position within the Division of Environmental Health and Public Safety and reports to the Associate Vice Chancellor of EHPS. The Director is accountable for overseeing the administration of an institutional risk management program, which includes handling the procurement of insurance coverage for the University within the framework of the North Carolina Department of Insurance. The Director also provides consultation to university stakeholders regarding available techniques to manage risks to include contract reviews in support of the Office of General Counsel. These risks include conventional risks and enterprise ricks. The Director assists and negotiates in handling and settlement of claims on behalf of the University. The Director interacts and collaborates with other key entities and agencies such as the NC Department of Insurance, FEMA, NC Department of Public Safety, and the State of North Carolina Insurance Agent of Record. The Director supervises Insurance Risk Management employees. Currently, the Director also serves as the University Privacy Officer.

Minimum Education/Experience: A Bachelor's degree in business, public administration or related field is required or equivalent of 10 years experience in risk management.

Department Required Skills: Must have the analytical ability to manage and understand the technical requirements of insurance and risk management. Must be able to negotiate the behalf of the University with officials at State and Federal levels, as well as, industry Must maintain a high level of expertise in a very broad range of insurance and risk management issues and concerns. Must independently develop risk management programs and interact, advise, and consult with deans, directors, ad department heads as well as departmental staff and students to provided technical guidance. Required to work independently Must have some knowledge of legal principals as to civil law and torts.

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education: Prior work in a risk management department is preferred or in insurance operations. Prefer Master's degree and 5 years or greater of related professional experiences or relevant undergraduate degree and a minimum of 10 years experience of relevant experience may be substituted for the advance degree. Preferred experience with Administration of Risk Management and Insurance programs of public entities.

Necessary Licenses and Certifications: Required to hold professional designations encompassing either ARM - Associate In Risk Management or CPCU - Chartered Property Causality Underwriter Valid DL required NCDL within 60 days of hire
