The Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto invites applications for a three-year Contractually Limited-Term Appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor in the area of Strategic Management with a focus in Computer Science, specifically in Quantum Computing and Deep Learning. The appointment will commence on July 1, 2018 and will end on June 30, 2021.
We seek an enthusiastic individual with the ability and ambition to advance activities within Rotman's Creative Destruction Lab (CDL) and Management Data Lab (MDL) initiatives. The Creative Destruction Lab is a seed-stage program for massively scalable, science-based companies. The program employs an objectives-based mentoring process with the goal of maximizing equity-value creation. The Management Data Lab is a new initiative within the Rotman School which aims to enhance data usage and the application of machine learning applications in our research and teaching.
Candidates must have recently earned a Ph.D. in Computer Science or in a related field by the start date of the appointment or shortly thereafter. The successful candidate must have a commitment to excellence in research, teaching and pedagogical inquiry as demonstrated by strong endorsements from referees of high standing, working papers or publications, and a creative, coherent and complete dossier highlighting research and teaching accomplishments, courses taught and any evaluations or relevant materials, and a list of professional experience advising and working with technology startups.
The successful candidate will have quantum machine learning expertise and experience advising technology startups, ideally in the quantum machine learning space. They must possess excellent expository, organizational, communication, and strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues on programs. They will have the capacity to expertly incorporate current research in quantum machine learning into their teaching of our graduate and undergraduate courses. Evidence of excellence in communicating research findings can be demonstrated through the expository skills evident in a candidate's research papers, presentation slides, conference presentations and strong letters of reference. Prior experience or knowledge of the activities of the Creative Destruction Lab is an asset.
The position will also involve instruction in quantum machine learning and advising technology startups. Teaching duties are focused in our graduate programs, and will include providing not-for-credit mini-courses and program-required courses as well as coaching and mentoring of industry projects and guest lecturing.
As a recognized expert in quantum computing and data science, the successful candidate will help in leading and supporting research initiatives in the area machine learning at Rotman as well as fostering links between Rotman students interested in data science and machine learning and the CDL and MDL. In addition, the individual will be required to work with the lab manager of the MDL to help provide input on the required data resources and software needed to undertake the initiatives listed above.
Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
