Position Summary -

The Simulation Lab State Team Lead position will support the learning labs including high fidelity simulation labs as defined by the WGU National Prelicensure curriculum. The incumbent is responsible for assuring high quality lab experiential learning for students, for providing quality oversight, training and guidance of all lab instructors within the state to ensure national consistency of lab experiences and instructor performance. The position reports to the State Director of Nursing.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities -

The Simulation State Team Lead is an expert lab instructor and a role model to all lab instructors within the state in providing high quality learning, consistency with the national curriculum, consistency and expertise in performing the required documentation of student performance including assessment tools and communication with the lab scheduling team. The SSTL is a SME in the use of simulation, esp. high fidelity simulation in the instruction of pre-licensure nursing curriculum- and delegates to population-specific SMEs/ instructors (Med-Surg, Pediatric etc.) as appropriate. When serving in the role of Lab Instructor, the SSTL is the instructor of record responsible for the oversight of – several cohorts of student nurses in the lab learning lab and at the lab site, teaching both nursing lab skills and simulated patient care situational scenarios. Courses range from Fundamentals, Medical/Surgical Nursing, Critical Care, Pediatrics, and Women's Health -- giving the SSTL a full range of teaching responsibilities. Additionally the SSTL is responsible for training and onboarding of all lab faculty within the designated state or region to ensure consistency of instruction, assessment and documentation of the student learning experience.

  • Support students in the identification of their individual learning needs.
  • Provide and maintain consistent lab learning experience for students and staff.
  • Incorporate student and self as an integral part of the nursing team in the provision of safe patient care when teaching in a simulated environment.
  • Ensure a safe and healthy work environment, complies with college of health and safety policies, practices, and programs in keeping with occupational health & safety legislation and regulation.
  • Models professional standards, including customer service, collaboration, communication, excellence, attendance, and consistency with the CHP mission, vision and philosophy.
  • Performs remediation with students in skills area
  • Works closely with college staff to appropriately integrate lab operations, obtain maximum utilization for the most efficient expenditure, and to moderate student costs.
  • Develop and maintain lab relationships to ensure high quality lab experiences for students and continued growth of the prelicensure program.
  • Provide orientation and substantial first cohort support to new lab faculty and technician to the WGU model and standards for lab instruction.
  • Facilitate and maintain a respectful and professional working environment incorporating active learning, reflective thinking, and a confidential debriefing process.
  • Integrate evidence-based tools and measurements to evaluate student learning.
  • Collaborate and support the State Director of Nursing to include on-site evaluation of lab faculty and staff to maintain consistency and quality of lab and simulation experiential learning in a specified region that is consistent with national WGU standards.

(Lab operations responsibilities vary depending on whether the site is WGU-operated or rented from a hospital or separate school of nursing).

  • Participate in identifying potential lab sites and collaborate on site contracting discussions.
  • Manage lab partner sites to foster effective relationships under the guidance of the State Director of Nursing.
  • Is a role model for WGU ajunct faculty in communicating and demonstrating high professional practice and communication standards between WGU staff, volunteers, adjunct faculty and members of the larger community.
  • Support quality improvement measurements related to faculty and student satisfaction
  • Reviews all lab student feedback from post lab surveys and raises concerns or issues necessary to improve lab experience quality
  • Any other duties as appropriately assigned or required
Required Skills:
  • Evaluation of teaching and learning against WGU practice standards.
  • Ability to anticipate and effectively adapt to changes in program requirements and methodology.
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse faculty, staff, and student body.
  • Ability to align to a national model, work and collaborate well with teams.
  • Contemporary lab competence and knowledge about simulation both high fidelity and virtual reality as evidenced by relevant continuing education and professional organization affiliation.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule to include weekends to support lab instructional needs.
  • Excellent verbal, non-verbal and electronic communication and collaboration skills.
  • Ability to learn and apply integrated technology systems and tools as required to maintain consistency with the national program.

  • Masters Degree in Nursing
  • Pre-approved as faculty if required by the state.
  • Master's or higher degree in nursing, nursing education or administration from an accredited college or university.
  • One (1) year experience teaching in prelicensure registered nursing programs
  • Unencumbered RN license for the state of hire.
  • Prior experience in lab and high fidelity simulation nursing education.
