About the Position

The University Library Head of Access Services works respectfully and cooperatively with employees in the King Library, providing leadership, planning and supervision necessary for effective departmental operations and services.

The Head of Access Services directly oversees the day-to-day operations of the Access Services Unit that includes Stack Maintenance and Circulation Systems and Services. The position is responsible for allocating and administering all University Access Services budgets and serves as the contact and expert for library circulation services. The Head of Access Services meets as appropriate with department/unit heads, library administrators, campus personnel, and CSU system-wide colleagues, ensuring that Access Services Unit programs and plans support library, campus and CSU goals. The incumbent keeps the Associate Dean informed of significant issues and developments in the unit and communicates appropriate information from library administration and other library units to Access Services staff. Additional responsibilities of the position include project management, supplying work lead direction to six classified staff, online circulation system oversight and providing collaborative leadership with the San Jose Public Library Head of Access Services.

This position reports to the Associate Dean for Technology and Information Services and serves on Library management and leadership groups that set priorities and goals for services. These groups determine Library operational issues, policies and procedures.

Education and Experience

A bachelor's degree and/or equivalent training and four years of administrative work experience involving study, analysis, and/or evaluation leading to the development or improvement of administrative policies, procedures, practices, or programs.

Preferred Qualifications

-Bachelors degree and 5 years of library Access Services/Circulation experience
-3 years supervisory, planning and leadership experience
-Experience overseeing library public service functions
-Experience creating and analyzing statistical reports
-Experience with partnerships, including internal and external organizations

-Extensive and in-depth knowledge of library circulation practices, systems and principles.
-Extensive and in-depth knowledge of project management practices and the ability to formulate appropriate courses of action, which have broad and far-reaching impact.
-Substantial program leadership skills in a complex organizational unit with broad impact on library services.
-Excellent written and oral communication skills.
-Ability to maintain flexibility and adapt to change.
-Ability to effectively use applicable library information systems and applications in analysis and reporting activities and projects.

-Ability to maintain confidentiality and appropriately handle sensitive communications with employees and external agencies.
-Ability to effectively communicate with and influence high-level and diverse contacts inside and outside of the CSU system.
-Ability to make independent decisions and exercise sound judgment, as well as anticipate problems and address them proactively.
-Strong ability to lead teams effectively and promote a spirit of collaboration and excellence within an organization unit.
-Comprehensive knowledge of external online databases, systems, resources, and trends pertaining to the assigned functional area, including expertise in search strategies.
-Comprehensive knowledge of the institutions and librarys policies and practices associated with the ethical use of and access to library and online resources, as well as general knowledge of the library bill of rights and code of ethics.
-Comprehensive knowledge of national and institutional standards pertaining to copyright and intellectual property protection and the ability to apply this knowledge to ensure full compliance with legal requirements.
-Extensive knowledge of software applications; including, but not limited to statistical software, word processing, spreadsheet, database management, integrated online library systems, Internet and e-mail.
-Ability to plan and execute multiple work and projects without detailed guidance.
-Comprehensive knowledge and ability to gather and analyze data for the purpose of solution development and long-term planning.
