Degree and Area of Specialization:
Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree preferred.
Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:
Prior experience in academic department administration preferred. A strong candidate will demonstrate high-level organizational and critical thinking skills, as well as outstanding oral and written communication skills, and will demonstrate a record of superior task-management and follow-through. Preferred knowledge of campus human resources (including HRS), budgetary and finance regulations, and sponsored grants management.
License or certificate:
The person in this position serves as Department Administrator for the School of Journalism and Mass Communication, providing professional administrative leadership under general supervision of the Director. The Department Administrator directs and coordinates management of staff in their provision of departmental program support services. The responsibilities include personnel management, staff training, research administration, communication with the UW Foundation, dissemination of information, and the interpretation of rules and regulations on staff policies and procedures for university staff, academic staff, faculty, and graduate student positions. These tasks are performed in collaboration with the departmental Leadership Team to ensure compliance with the policies and procedures of the College and University. The Department Administrator has oversight of the School's budget, including the administration of foundation, grant, and trust funds.
This is a complex, high-level administrative position. The School of Journalism and Mass Communication has a budget expenditure amount to approximately 2.4 million including state funding, graduate shcool funding, revenue funding, and UW Foundation funding. Personnel consists of 20 faculty and instructional staff, 7 non-instruction academic staff, 3 university staff, 20+ grad assistants and numerous student hourlies. This position supervises the administrative office support staff in the School.
