Primary Function of Organization Unit: The 1,500 acre Lake Wheeler Road Field Laboratory (LWRFL) serves as a platform for agricultural research, teaching and extension. The primary purpose of the Field Lab is to provide land, personnel, expertise, facilities and equipment to support the academic, research and teaching mission of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.
Essential Job Duties: The Research Technician position supports the agricultural field research operations. As research programs evolve over time, this position may be called upon to do a wide variety of tasks, all related to agricultural research and support. The position will be working outdoors in conditions of both heat and cold, may be working with field crops, horticultural crop or livestock and will be expected to operate agricultural equipment. The validity of research depends upon the quality of work in the research technician position. This position has diverse responsibilities and will rely on general agricultural and farm maintenance knowledge. Duties include, but are not limited to truck, equipment and vehicle operation, livestock, feed, equipment and crop transport, general farm maintenance, farm waste management, agricultural duties, operating specialized equipment and other duties as assigned.
Department Required Skills: Basic familiarity with farm equipment (tractors and back hoes) operation and the ability to operate that equipment safely and accurately. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs on a daily basis. Ability to read and follow research protocols and pesticide labels. Ability to communicate in both oral and written forms. Candidates must have proven ability to work independently, sound decision making and ability to work with a diverse group.
Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education: Two year degree in agriculture or related field or high school degree plus 3 years experience in agriculture. Experience in operation of farm equipment or research equipment.
Necessary Licenses and Certifications: A valid drivers license is required for travel. NC drivers license required within 60 days of hire and must be maintained. A valid CDL is required within 60 days of hire and must be maintained.
