Position Summary: DIRECTOR, RURAL PROGRAMS The College of Community Health Sciences at The University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa An Assistant or Associate Professor to serve as Director of Rural Programs, tenured or tenure earning track in the Department of Family, Internal and Rural Medicine (FIRM). Responsibilities will include a leadership role in overseeing faculty and staff who conduct rural programs intended to attract and nurture rural students through a pipeline of programs meant to produce rural health professionals, primarily rural physicians. The College consists of a unique Department of FIRM consisting of 24 Family and Internal Medicine physician faculty and a core interdisciplinary faculty of 56 others in the fields of OB/GYN, Peds, Psychiatry, Psychology, Surgery, Neurology, Social Work, Education, Library Science, Clinical Pharmacy, Nursing, Nutrition, and Population Health - all dedicated to FM residency education, the general professional education of medical students, and the scholarship of primary care.
Minimum Preferred Qualifications: DIRECTOR OF RURAL PROGRAMS The College of Community Health Sciences at The University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa is seeking an MD/DO or PhD in an educational or health related field to serve as Director of Rural Programs of the College. The individual would be appointed as an Assistant or Associate Professor, tenured or tenure earning in the Department of Family, Internal and Rural Medicine (FIRM). The CCHS Rural Programs comprise a 25-year-old central strategy of the College and the UA School of Medicine to develop a workforce for underserved rural communities of Alabama. A nationally recognized, award winning program, the Program has proven highly effective and has widespread support within the State. Founding leadership of the program is transitioning, allowing the opportunity for further innovation and research. The Director will oversee faculty and staff who conduct rural programs intended to attract and nurture rural students through a pipeline of programs meant to produce rural health professionals, primarily rural physicians. A principal responsibility of the position is to provide leadership and oversight of the Rural Medical Scholars Program, a five-year program to train rural physicians which at the heart of the Rural Programs. A collaboration, since 1996, of the UA College of Community Health Sciences and the University of Alabama School of Medicine, the RMSP is a designated track of the SOM which includes a selective admissions process for college seniors or graduates from rural Alabama into a prematriculation Masters degree at UA in Tuscaloosa, followed by matriculation to the SOM in Birmingham, and a return to Tuscaloosa for the clinical training years. All other Tuscaloosa students are in the Primary Care Track of the UASOM, and all Tuscaloosa students complete a unique 3rd year LIC, called the "Tuscaloosa Longitudinal Community Curriculum" (or TLC2), with RSMP students receiving a rural placement. The Director will be a primary liaison to Alabama Area Health Education Centers who together with CCHS Rural Programs conduct pipeline programs for rural students to expose and prepare them for rural health careers. The Director will also work closely with the Rural Medical Program, a sister program in Huntsville, and the Office of Medical Education at the UASOM, all under oversight of and in coordination with CCHS Academic Affairs. The Rural Programs are a component of a unique Department of Family, Internal and Rural Medicine, consisting of 24 Family and Internal Medicine physician faculty, the Family Medicine residency and fellowships, 7 clinics in 4 geographic locations (including Rural sites) and comprising the largest department of the College. COLLEGE OVERVIEW: The College of Community Health Sciences was founded in 1972 by Dean William Willard, MD, author of the "Willard Report" and known as the "Father of Family Medicine," with a mandate to train family physicians for Alabama, particularly rural areas. CCHS has core interdisciplinary faculty of 56 in the fields of Family Medicine, FM/OB, Sports Medicine, Internal Medicine, Geriatrics, OB/GYN, Pediatrics, Psychiatry, Psychology, Surgery, Neurology, Social Work, Education, Library Science, Clinical Pharmacy, Nursing, Nutrition, and Population Health Sciences - all dedicated to the general professional education of medical students, rural health, FM residency education, and the scholarship of primary care. PROGRAMS: The College is sponsor of the UA Family Medicine Residency and 7 fellowships for Family Physicians. The residency, a 16-16-16 program and amongst the 3 largest FM residency in the country, now in its 45th year. Of the over 475 residency graduates, 85% practice in the five state area of the SE, half in rural areas. UAFMRP graduates in Alabama comprise one of every seven Family Physicians in the state, with three-quarters practicing in a HPSA. Over 900 students have completed their clinical training in Tuscaloosa since 1972, entering Family Medicine and primary care careers at over twice the national average. The College's nationally recognized Rural Programs and the Institute for Rural Health Research, along with basic science, social science, and health professional resources and collaborators on campus among the UA faculty, and innumerable specialty and medical research faculty among UAB faculty, create a uniquely resource-rich environment for a medical educator. The College's clinical enterprise conducts 75,000 ambulatory visits in three locations and over 10,000 admissions a year to a broad patient population, including the faculty and staff population of UA. POSITION: Candidates must hold a MD/DO or PhD degree, current DEA certificate as applicable, current (or eligibility for) Alabama licensure, be board certified in a primary care discipline with FM strongly preferred as applicable or appropriate licensure as applicable to one's field. The candidate is expected to obtain an appointment to UA Graduate Faculty and like all CCHS faculty will be recommended for appointment to UAB faculty as well. 5 years experience, specific to rural experience strongly encouraged. Prior academic, teaching and/or leadership experience preferred. The individual will dedicate approximately 50% effort to administration of the Rural programs, approximately 30% clinical practice and supervision/precepting or other research and teaching as applicable to one's field, and have time for personal scholarship.
