The University of Miami Miller School of Medicine's John P. Hussman Institute for Human Genomics has an exciting career opportunity for a Senior Manager, Communications (Research Support). This position will provide administrative and scientific support and assistance to the Director of the Hussman Institute. The Senior Manager, Communications will establish policies and standard operating protocols and provide guidance within assigned program areas to support the accomplishment of program objectives. Also develops, coordinates, and advises administrative staff regarding program policy; leads the communications team; and assists in scientific technical writing and in publications and manuscript preparation.The specific duties and responsibilities for this position may include, but are not limited to, establishing program policies and standard operation protocols, developing and maintaining research standards of the Hussman Institute; planning, coordinating, and supervising related procedures, processes, services, and systems; training, developing, implementing, and supervising related procedures, processes, services, and systems; training employees in the proper methods and procedures and ensuring correctness of work for grant submissions; assisting the Hussman Institute Director with journal article submissions; formatting manuscripts, references, tables, and figures to adhere to journal requirements; ensuring compliance with federal guidelines to Open Access Law by uploading research papers to the federal repository; overseeing research efforts in several research grants and solving any problems that arise; identifying funding opportunities for faculty members; assisting the Hussman Institute Director in all federal and private grant applications; developing budget justifications; and ensuring grant applications are complete and all documents are uploaded by deadlines. Duties and responsibilities may also include developing and executing all collateral materials for the Hussman Institute such as flyers, news releases, brochures, posters, and banners; ensuring compliance with the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine branding standards; coordinating work with all outside vendors; acting as a liaison to the school's communications department such as responding to media inquiries; fact-checking articles; developing background material for reporters, VIPs, donors, and study participants; overseeing, evaluating, and monitoring on-the-job performance of staff; supervising the communications team by conducting annual reviews and keeping staff informed of communications procedures and policies; and administers the annual JJ Vance Memorial Summer Internship Program in Biological and Computational Sciences.
The minimum qualifications for this position are as follows: Bachelor's Degree in Public Relations, English, Communications, Journalism, or a closely related field of study. At least four years of work experience involving public relations, marketing, journalism, and/or writing duties that includes some experience overseeing or supervising employees. Demonstrated leadership abilities and skills shown by successfully leading a team or group in projects, work assignments, or policy updates. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to professionally collaborate with others. Proficiency and experience using Microsoft Office Suite. Ability to manage and coordinate the activities of other employees and ensure a high level of performance. Strong organizational and leadership skills, follow-through, and demonstrated ability to multi-task and meet deadlines. Any relevant education, certifications and/or work experience may be considered.
