About the Position

The Director of Executive Communications for Strategic Communications and Marketing is responsible for developing, organizing and executing strategic communication plans and activities on behalf of the President and other senior leaders written, digital/interactive and verbal communication and messaging. The incumbent ensures articulation of the President's goals and objectives for the university's mission, values and strategic direction in all communications and media. The Director of Executive Communications works closely with senior leadership, Development, Alumni Relations, Strategic Communications and Marketing, and Advancement Athletics.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
- Researching, drafting, and refining voice communications including preparing texts, informal remarks and talking points based on institutional priorities and specific event and audience parameters
- Supporting the president's digital communications and other select message platforms, including digital newsletters, blogs, website and social media accounts
- Develop executive communications in written, video, and digital formats.
- Write content in the President's voice and message for use in University and external print, Web, and social/digital communications; discussions and communications with external and internal constituents; media; and with defined audiences.
- Prepare taking points for the president's public speaking opportunities (and develop PowerPoint slides) and draft opinion editorials on current issues.
- Develop ideas, information and analyses for speeches and statements on major issues. Advise on content, approach, tone and other aspects of communication.
- Coordinate, write and distribute communications for various senior level officials.
- Participating in other institutional activities at the discretion of the AVP for Strategic Communications and Marketing, in consultation with the Office of the President and others as appropriate

This is a position in the CSU - Management Personnel Plan (MPP), and serves at the pleasure of the President. This position will require adherence to University compliance training such as: Conflict of Interest and Ethics, AB 1825 Sexual Harassment Prevention, Information Security, and Injury and Illness Prevention Program. The person hired for this position may be required to complete an outside employment disclosure statement in accordance with Title V of the California Code of Regulations.

Education and Experience

- Bachelor's degree in journalism, public relations, communications, English, or related field
- Five to seven years of professional experience writing executive or legislative communications for public or private sector senior executives
- Experience with voice and message strategist
- Experience using different media including Web, social media, and traditional environments to communicate
- Experience in an institutional/educational environment utilizing a customer-oriented and serve-centered attitude
- Experience working effectively with a wide range of audiences - including faculty, students, leadership, staff, alumni, community groups, donors, and elected officials

Preferred Qualifications

- Master's degree in journalism, English, communications, public relations, or related field
- Experience as an executive speechwriter
- Experience working within an academic setting
- Excellent written communication skills
- Experience using different media including Web, social media, and traditional environments to communicate

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

- Familiarity with and expertise in translating concepts and themes - often complex and nuanced into clear, persuasive communications
- Knowledge of interview techniques and the ability to define and deliver messages; ability to interview, research and write for web and print publication
- Expertise understanding a subject's "voice" and effectively applying knowledge and insights into effective messaging for delivery through multiple channels
- Knowledge of methods for researching and identifying communication needs and target audiences; through knowledge of web communication techniques, vehicles and formats; ability to effectively use web technology to achieve communication goals
- Collaborative and open to input and new ideas; comfortable working in a rapid-response, team environment.
- Detail-oriented with skills in time and organizational management.
- Ability to present information that meets the requirements of the media and publications involved and that is designed for audiences for varying interests
- Excellent customer service experience requiring a high level of diplomacy and professionalism
- High standard of ethical and confidentiality in dealing with internal and external constituencies
- Excellent organizational and time management skills
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
